It was a high cliff (悬崖). Tom had been climbing for a long time. He was getting tired. Suddenly a piece of rock broke off his fingers. He almost fell.

He looked down and again almost fell. The ground was far below him. He looked up. It was still a long way to the top. He let his foot feel around below, but there was nothing there. He couldn't find the rock where his foot had been.“I'm going to fall,”he said aloud. His voice sounded frightened. Behind and below him ,quite near , a girl's voice spoke.

“Hold on hold on and I'll help you ,”she said.

Tom was afraid to look down again.

“Where did you come from?”he asked.

“I saw you were in trouble , so I came to help” she answered.

Her voice was closer. She must be just below me , Tom thought.

“If I fall, I'll hit you,”he said, “and you will fall too. You'd better go back. There is no way down from here. ”

“I know,”the girl said,“you have to keep going up. See that crack(裂缝) in the rock a long arm's reach? Take your time , but reach for it”.

Tom reached and found the crack. His fingers gripped it.

“Now move your right foot up,”the girl said.“you will feel a place for your toes. Don't look back just keep going up. ”

Tom moved up slowly , carefully.

“Now reach for those tree roots that are coming through above you,” the girl said. Tom reached and gripped them. And slowly, with the girl telling him where to put his hands and feet, Tom climbed. At last he made it. One strong pull , and he was over the top. He fell facedown on the grass , his eyes shut , too tired to move.

“Thank you , ”he said. “You saved me. This is a dangerous climb. I shouldn't have tried it. A girl fell from here last year. She was killed.”

“Yes,”the girl's voice said, “I was killed.” It sounded far away.

Tom jumped to his feet , suddenly cold , his eyes wide.

There was no one there no one at all.

Tom was one of the brightest boys in the year, with supportive parents. But when he was 15 he suddenly stopped trying. He left school at 16 with only two scores for secondary school subjects. One of the reasons that made it cool or fun not to care was the power of his peer group.

The lack of right male role models in many of their lives --- at home and particularly in the school environment-means that their peers are the only people they have to judge themselves against.

They don't see men succeeding in society so it doesn't occur to them that they could make something of themselves.Without male teachers as a role model.the effect of peer actions and street culture is all-powerful.Boys want to be part of a club. However, schools can provide the environment for change, and provide the right role models for them.Teachers need to be trained to stop that but not in front of a child's peers. You have to do it one to one, because that is when you see the real child.

It's pointless sending a child home if he or she has done wrong. They see it as a welcome day off to watch television or play computer games.Instead.schools should have a special unit where a child who has done wrong goes for the day and gets advice about his problems somewhere he can work away from his peers and go home after the other children.
