Some people
think that the Internet is a necessary part of our getting an education, but
others blame it for making people addicted (
上瘾). This article will
discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the Internet.
One of the
advantages of the Internet is that one can find all the information on it
with ease(
轻易,毫不费劲). Internet
portals (入口) like "YAHOO" and
"AltaVista" have been created to help us do so. With an Internet
connection at home, one has almost no need to go to a library, and this can
save a lot of time. Another advantage is that we can communicate with almost
everyone over the Net. Email is much cheaper and faster than the normal mail.
On the other
hand, the disadvantages are a serious problem for today’s world. The Internet
has led to a new disease: Internet addiction. Many students who used to work
hard on their studies now spend all their time online, chatting and doing other
worthless things, and wasting a lot of money in Internet cafes. In extreme(
极端的) cases teens are even
lured (引诱) into doing things that are improper and even
illegal (不合法的), such as making videos for adults.
The Internet
is part of our lives now, but we still have to learn to avoid the dangers that
come with it. We should remember that it’s only a source of information, and
not a way to search for true friendship.

There are warm tropical regions all over the globe, but only the Indians of the South American rain forests have formed the habit of sleeping in the open air. Long before they made painful acquaintance (相识) with Europeans, they had invented something that was unique on earth: the hammock.
Nobody really knows who first had the bright idea of making sleeping in the air the symbol of untroubled rest. The Indians see the hammock as a “gift of heaven (上天)”, something given to them a very long time ago.
In it the Indians pass away hot noon hours, napping or chatting. Swinging it to and fro (来回摆动) creates a cooling breath of air and keeps away insects. They work and play in hammocks, are born and die there.
Hung like a suspension bridge between heaven and earth, a hammock is dry while the soil is damp and is safe from most wild animals.
Hammocks have the advantage over beds in that they are easy to transport and take up very little space when they have been rolled up(卷起) . Indians never go on a journey without their hammocks, not even to their plantations.

A. a suspension cage which can be swung to and fro in the air
B. a seat hanging by two ropes from the branch of a tree

C. keep away wild animals D. all asleep quickly
79. According to the passage, hammocks _______.
A. cannot be rolled up B. are difficult to transport
C. are never brought to the plantations D. can be kept dry while the ground is wet
80. The passage is about _______.
A. the Indian way of living B. tropical regions

Most children now chat daily either online or through their mobile phones. They are connecting to a huge number of other children all over the world. Some are shy “in real life” but are confident to communicate with others online; others find support from people of their own age on relationship issues, or problems at home.
Sometimes the online world, just like the real world, can introduce problems, such as arguments. Going online is great fun, but there are also a few people who use the Internet for offensive (冒犯性的) or illegal aims. Children must be made aware of both the good things and the dangers.
To keep children safe your management must cover the family computer. Just as you decide which TV pro-grams are suitable, you need to do the same for the websites and chat rooms your children visit. Remind your children that online friends are still strangers. Re-minding them of the risks will keep them alert (警惕).
Computer studies are part of schoolwork now, so it’s likely that your children may know more than you do. We get left behind when it comes to the latest gad-gets and the interactive areas of websites, like chat rooms and message boards, which are especially strange. The language of chat is strange to many parents, too. Chatters love to use abbreviations (缩写) such as: atb — all the best, bbfn — bye bye for now, cul8er — see you later, gr8 — great, Idk — I don’t know, imbl — it must be love, kit — keep in touch, paw — parents are watching, lol — laugh out loud, xlnt — excellent!
1.The passage is meant for ______.
A.children B.parents C.teachers D.net bar owners
2.Which of the following will the author probably agree with?
A.The Internet is no good for children.
B.The chat language is strange to adults.
C.Children shouldn’t chat so much online.
D.The Internet is a good place for children.
3.In order to keep children safe online, you’d better ______.
A.choose suitable websites and chat rooms for them
B.teach them to use correct net words
C.surf the Internet together with them
D.forbid them to use the Internet
4.If you stand beside him when your son is chatting about something secret online, he may use ______.
A.bbfn B.lol C.paw D.cul8er
