And Billy was the 5 one who had been near Jan's desk. By now the children were quiet, obviously waiting for me to take 6 . Perhaps I hadn't slept well the night before; 7 perhaps it was the look of expectation in the children's eyes. 8 , I lost my control. I scolded Billy for being 9 . "Give Jan her dime." I ordered. Billy didn't say one word in 10 . "Now turn all your 11 inside out and take off your shoes!" He did 12 . But there was no dime. " 13 your desk!" I commanded. Patiently he did so. The dime wasn't there either. He returned the books and papers to his desk without a word. Then he 14 his face in his arms. Instantly I 15 my mistake. I, the person who could defend him, had 16 him. That afternoon one of the boys went to the front of the room to sharpen his pencil. "Hey!" he cried, "Here's Jan's dime on the board ledge. She must have 17 it here when she sharpened her pencil." I felt heartsick. I went to Billy, and 18 him into my arms. "I'm so sorry, Billy. I had no 19 to scold you. Will you ever pardon me?" Slowly he raised his eyes to mine. There were no tears but the 20 in his eyes branded my heart forever. 查看更多

Phone books have white, blue and yellow pages. The white pages list people with phones by last name. The blue pages contain numbers of city services, government services and public schools. Business and professional services are listed in a special directory-the Yellow pages.

The area covered by one area code may be small or large. For example,New York City has one code area, but so does the whole state of Oregon. There is an area code of the map of the US and Canada in the front of the white pages.

If you make a long distance call and get a wrong number, call the operator and explain what happened. This means that you can make the call again to the right number without having to pay more money;or you can have the phone company mail you a credit coupon that has the same value as the phone call.

My grandfather lived only half a mile away from where I grew up in New York. Every day, he would walk down to our house and bring my dad newspapers. Along with the papers he would bring a small bag of treats (美食) for my two brothers and me.

Western New York had terrible winter weather: rain, sleet (雨夹雪), or even 3 feet of snow. Even when he was 81, he still walked the half mile every single day. As a child, I looked forward to the daily treats, but now I’m older and I realize he braved the rough weather each day just to see us smile; I now value that more than anything else.

My grandfather touched many lives. A woman who had been in hospital for five years told me her story. She said my grandfather would visit her twice a week at her home: to read to her, play bridge, or just chat. It lasted for years without stop. She had few visitors. Even a hitch-hiker who my grandfather had picked up for free told me of my grandfather’s influence on his life. My grandfather took the traveler to his home. After learning that the man was homeless, my grandfather gave him a place to stay. The man told me that no one had ever been so nice to him. He later found a job in a supermarket.

I was touched, but not surprised to know all of the touching stories from which I understood my grandfather’s selflessness. I have since tried to learn from him to help others. Although he died years ago, we still respect him.
