    A blacklist of 19 leading search engine portals (门户) and websites, including Google and Baidu, which “spread vulgar (lacking in good taste) content and harm the young people” has been published, the Chinese government said Monday.

    According to Xinhua News Agency, six central departments conducted a month – long campaign to clean up the Internet of unhealthy and vulgar materials.

“The government will continue to punish or even shut down those shameful Websites that refuse to connect their wrongdoing.” Gai Mangham, director of the State Council Information Office, said. “Immediate action is needed to clean up the Internet environment.”

The government demanded the web portals, a number of video sharing sites, including Sina, Sohu and NetEase, Google in Chinese and other websites to remove vulgar photos after due notice but they failed and continued providing links to these unhealthy sites.

    Google China’s spokeswoman Cui Jin, however, explained that “Google is neither the owner of those Websites nor does it spread (that) information intentionally. We have also adopted ‘safe search’ to block sites with such content automatically. ”

    Baidu, NetEase. com. Ine and SINA Corp., in web statements on Wednesday, admitted their guilt, and apologized for failing to control such contend. Google China, on the other hand, promised to cooperate with Internet users and society to help build a healthy Internet culture. “After we received notice from relevant government departments, we cleaned up links to vulgar content that could have harmful effects on Internet users,” it added.

Hungry for the brightest students, many of the country's stronger universities are actively discounting tuition （学费）．And it's the high achievers, rather than the needy students, who are getting a good chunk of the money．The practice is remarkably widespread, reaching almost all but the 30 or so Ivy and other top colleges that forbid good grades-based financial aid．Schools are also becoming more aggressive in raising their discounts．At the DePauw University Website, enter an SAT or ACT score, grade point average and class rank, and a computer program immediately tells you what kind of "award"．Only "the real unlucky" pay full price any more．

About 76% of first-year students got some form of discount this year at 331 private schools．Average award per student: $7,000．At small schools with tuition under about $20,000, the average discount is even higher, with some schools returning over half their tuition．                                                          

Carnegie Mellon even tells students it will "negotiate（讨价还价）" and perhaps match financial-aid packages if kids are offered bigger awards at other schools．Much as banks and insurers offer special rates to their best customers, schools are giving the biggest breaks to their top students．Public four-year colleges, too, are offering discounts．

There is one foreign product the Japanese are buying faster than others, and its popularity has caused an uneasy feeling among many Japanese.

That product is foreign words.

Gairaigo—words that come from outside— have been part of the Japanese language for centuries. Mostly borrowed from English and Chinese, these terms are often changed into forms no longer understood by native speakers.

But in the last few years the trickle (涓涓流水) of foreign words has become a flood, and people fear the increasing use of foreign words is making it hard for

the Japanese to understand each other and could lead to many people forgetting the good qualities of traditional (传统的) Japanese.

“The popularity of foreign words is part of the Japanese interest in anything new,” says university lecturer and writer Takashi Saito. “By using a foreign word you can make a subject seem new, which makes it easier for the media(媒体) to pick up."
