To get an extra 14 years of life, don't smoke, eat lots of fruits and vegetables, exercise regularly and drink alcohol in a proper amount. That is according to a study published this Monday in the Public Library of Science Medicine Journal

After tracking more than 20,000 people aged 45 to 79 years in the United Kingdom from about 1993 to 2007, Kay-Tee Khaw of the University of Cambridge and his colleagues found that people who adopted these four healthy habits lived all average of 14 years longer than those who didn't.

“We've known for a long time that these behaviors are good things to do, but we've not seen this benefit before, ”said Susan Jebb, head of Nutrition and Health at Britain's Medical Research Council.“The benefit was also seen regardless of whether or not people were fat and what social class they came from.”

Study participants(参与者)scored a point each for not smoking, regular physical activity, eating five servings of fruits and vegetables a day and moderate alcohol intake.

Public health experts said they hoped the study would inspire governments to introduce policies helping people to adopt these changes. But because the study only observed people rather than testing specific changes, it would be impossible to conclude that people who suddenly adopted these healthy behaviors would surely gain 14 years.

“We can't say that any person could gain 14 years by doing these things, ”said Dr.Tim Armstrong, a physical activity expert at the World Health Organization.“The 14 years is an average across the population of what's theoretically(理论上地)possible.”

“Most people know that things like a good diet matter and that smoking isn't good for them, ”Susan Jebb said.“We need to work on providing people with much more practical support to help them change.”

People often say,“Children can’t do maths problems. It’s because parents can’t do their children’s homework.”Here’s an example to show what I mean.

The other day my daughter brought home her maths homework,“I have to subtract(减) 179 from 202,”she said.

  “It’s quite easy,”I said.“You put the 202 over the 179.”

“But we need a 10 here. Where is the 10?”

“I don’t know where the 10 is. Let’s just subtract 179 from 202. Nine from two is three. You carry one and add it to seven. Eight from zero is two. The answer is 23.”

“We can’t do it that way. We have to use the 10.”

“Well, I’m going to call your teacher to see how she subtracts 179 from 202.”

Over the telephone, I said that I was having a bit of trouble with the homework she had given to my daughter. The teacher said,“In the right-hand column we have units of one. The two in that column counts for two ones. The zero in the centre counts for zero tens. The two in the left-hand column counts for hundreds. Are you clear?”But I didn’t think it was clear.

I hung up and found my way to the medicine box. My head was now hurting. I started putting pills of medicine into my mouth.“How many did you take?”my wife asked.“I took one and then I took another… I knew one and one was two, but don’t ask me what it is now.”

1.The daughter wanted ________ the other day.

[ ]

A.to give her father a lesson

B.to show how difficult maths was

C.her father to phone her teacher

D.her father to help her with the homework

2.Which of the following sentences is not true?

[ ]

A.The father had a different way to do the maths problem.

B.The father couldn’t do his daughter’s maths homework.

C.The daughter couldn’t understand her father’s way.

D.The daughter had some trouble doing the maths problem.

3.From what the teacher said, we know the word units means ________ here.

[ ]

A.whole numbers less than 10

B.whole things

C.groups of lessons

D.the smallest numbers

4.What the teacher said made the father ________.

[ ]

A.angry
B.worried
C.sad
D.tired

5.Can you guess what would happen next in the story?

[ ]

A.The father would go to school and begin to learn maths.

Years ago, when I started looking for my first job, wise advisers said,“Barbara, be enthusiastic!Enthusiasm will take you further than any amount of experience.”How right they were!

“Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm,”wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson. It is the paste that helps you hang on there when the going gets tough. It is the inner voice that whispers,“I can do it!”when others shout,“No, you can’t!”It took years and years for the early work of Barbara Mc Clintock, a geneticist(遗传学家)who won the 1983 Nobel Prize in medicine, to be generally accepted.Yet she didn’t let up on her experiments.Work was such a deep pleasure for her that she never thought of stopping.

We are all born with wide-eyed, enthusiastic wonder and it is this childlike wonder that gives enthusiastic people such youthful air, whatever their age.At 90, cellist(大提琴家)Pablo Casals would start his day by playing Bach.As the music flowed through his fingers, his bent shoulders would straighten and joy would reappear in his eyes.As author and poet Samuel once wrote,“Years make the skin old, but to give up enthusiasm makes the soul old.”

Enthusiastic people also love what they do, regardless of money, title or power.Patricia Mcllrath, retired director of the Missouri Repertory Theater in Kansas City, was once asked where she got her enthusiasm. She replied,“My father, a lawyer, long ago told me, I never made a penny until I stopped working for money.”

If we cannot do what we love as a fulltime career, we can do it as a hobby.Elizabeth Layton of Wellsville, Kan, was 68 before she began to draw. This activity ended her sadness that had troubled her for at least 30 years, and the quality of her work led one critic(评论员)to say,“I am persuaded to call Layton a genius.”

We can’t afford to waste tears on“might-have-beens”.We need to turn the tears into sweat as we go after“what-can-be”.We need to live each moment whole-heartedly, with all our senses-finding pleasure in the sweet smell of a backyard garden, the simple picture of a six-year-old, and the beauty of a rainbow.
