Last Sunday, I waked into the house in the afternoon to find my brother rushing around in a hurry. As soon as I took my coat off, my little brother placed a bunch of papers in my hands and asked me to fold them up so they could fit into an envelope as quickly as possible. He said it needed to get done quickly before it turned dark.
I was a little surprised that something could be so urgent on a Sunday. It wasn’t until I was halfway through that I actually looked at what I was folding. After I read it, it put the biggest smile on my face. It was a lovely letter to all the residents (居民)in my neighborhood. My brother was asking everyone to let him know if anyone needed help. He left his contact information and said that anyone that needed help should get in touch with him and he would figure something out. He also asked people to get in touch if they were able to help out.
London received an unusual amount of snow last week, and the city was completely under- prepared for it. So it was quite difficult to get anywhere. Only the major roads had been cleared, and smaller roads and pavements could be quite treacherous. There are a good number of old people in our little community. So my brother thought that the snow may have posed (造成)some difficulty for some of them, particularly because we live on a hill.
A few elderly people got in touch with him asking for help for things they needed. One of them was especially grateful because his caregiver couldn’t make it. To our surprise, he got more responses from people offering to help. Then he received help from people who wanted to help. Everyone was really touched and wrote to my brother wonderful email. One of our neighbors wrote email saying that although she wasn’t able to help, she was “very proud of having a neighbor like him who puts other people’s interests first.”

    2. B.
      The snow was unexpectedly heavy.
    3. C.

One girl decided to study judo(柔道) although she had lost her left arm in a car accident.

The girl began lessons with an old Japanese judo instructor. The girl was doing well. So she couldn’t understand why, after three months of training, the instructor had taught her only one move.

“Instructor,” the girl finally said, “Shouldn’t I be learning more moves?”

“This is the only move you know, but this is the only move you’ll ever need to know,” the instructor replied.

Not quite understanding, but believing in her teacher, the girl kept training.

Several months later, the instructor took the girl to her first tournament. Surprising herself, the girl easily won her first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult, but after some time, her opponent became impatient and charged. The girl skillfully used her one move to win the match. Still amazed by her success, the girl was now in the finals.

This time, her opponent was bigger, stronger and more experienced. For a while, the girl appeared to be overmatched. Concerned that the girl might get hurt, the referee called a time-out. She was about to stop the match when the instructor intervened(干预).

“No,” the instructor insisted, “Let her continue.”

Soon after the match restarted, her opponent made a serious mistake: she dropped her guard. Instantly, the girl used her move to pin her opponent. The girl had won the match and the tournament. She was the champion.

On the way home, the girl and her teacher reviewed every move in each and every match. Then the girl gathered the courage to ask what was really on her mind.

“Instructor, how did I win the tournament with only one move?”

“You won for two reasons,” the teacher answered. “First, you’ve almost mastered one of the most difficult throws in all of judo. Second, the only known defense for that move is for your opponent to grab your left arm.”

The girl’s biggest weakness had become her biggest strength.

1.What can we learn about the girl?

A.She was disabled in an accident.            B.She disliked judo training.

C.She learnt several moves.                 D.She won the first two matches hard.

2.The underlined word “overmatched” probably means       .

3.The girl won the championship because of       .

A.her bravery        B.her skills          C.her tricks          D.her strength

4.Which of the following is probably the best title of the story?

Who are the most beautiful women in the world? Looking at the records, people might think Venezuelan women are. They win the Miss Latin America, Miss Universe, and Miss World contests more frequently than women from any other country. In Venezuela, the term “Miss” as in “Miss Universe” is an honored title.

These days, people in some cultures consider beauty contests to be silly. They have tried to stop these contests, saying the contests treat women as objects and place too much importance on women’s looks. But in Latin America, beauty contests are a source of pride. And in Venezuela, they are almost a national obsession(狂热).

Are Venezuelan women really more beautiful than other women? “They are not really more beautiful here,” says Selena, who trains girls for the contest. “It’s just that the girls here work harder and prepare more than anyone else.” Preparing for a contest is a full-time job that includes sixteen-hour days for six months. Many of the women take a leave of absence from their jobs during the training period. “If you don’t take this seriously, you don’t have a chance.” Selena says.

The preparation takes many hours a day. The contestants stretch their bodies and practice their walks down the runway. They work on their speeches and practice answering questions such as, “Whom do you admire most in the world?” They starve to stay slim. They take classes to learn how to style their hair and apply makeup. Most of them grow their hair long and diet to lose at least 10 pounds. Many of them have their teeth straightened or have plastic surgery (整形外科手术) to straighten or fix other body parts.

It isn’t easy, and the contestants give up a lot for the contest. One Miss Universe winner immediately put on 20 pounds after the contest. She said the only thing she wanted to do after the contest was to eat. The cost is high as well. The training for the Miss Venezuela and Miss Universe contests can cost up to $ 60,000. Fortunately the television station that sponsors (赞助) the contest pays the costs of training the finalists. Yet most of the contestants say it’s worth the effort. A former Miss Universe is now a mayor of a district in a large city. Although she had no political experience before that, she has been asked to run for higher political office.

Another winner has her own television show. Winners have an advantage they could not get anywhere else. “It’s the only chance you have to make it.” Says one contestant. “You can’t get these opportunities any other way.”

D. It’s too expensive for individuals (个人) to pay for the training for the contest.
