WHY IS THE SUN IMPORTANT?

The sun is a huge, hot, bright star.It is important because without it there would be no life on the earth. The sun gives us light and heat.

All living things need light and heat from the sun to live.Plants need light and heat to grow. They use the light from the sun to make food.We cannot make our own food, but plants can.All the food we eat comes from plants in a food chain(链)which starts with the sun.For example.

Animals need sunlight, too.Just like us, their food comes from a food chain which begins with the sun and the plants.

  sun→leaf→caterpillar(毛虫)→bird

  sun→seaweed(海藻)→small fish→whale(鲸)

Sunlight means we can see during the day.If there was no sun, it would be dark all the time.Even when the sky is cloudy, the sunlight is very strong and it shines through the clouds.

All living things must fight to stay alive. They have to feed on something and at the same time avoid being eaten. Therefore they have to solve this big problem of staying alive in their own way.

The danger of being eaten in the sea is great. Those plants and animals that do survive usually reproduce very fast and in great numbers.

Certain sea animals have defensive devices(装置)which help them to survive. The jelly fish have poisonous tentacles(触角)which are used for attack and defence.

Another method of survival which sea plants and animals use is disguise(伪装).They usually have the same colour as their surroundings.

In order to stay alive, animals need to have good senses.Fishes have sharp eyes.Almost all animals are sensitive to touch.Fishes judge movements in the water by means of their lines.Fishes and other sea animals can hear well and many of them can make different types of warning sound.

(1)

What is the greatest problem that the living things face?

[ ]

A.

They have to eat other things.

B.

They have to fight not to be eaten.

For many years, scientists couldn't figure out how atoms and molecules on the Earth combined to make living things. Plants, fish, dinosaurs, and people are made of atoms and molecules, but they are put together in a more complicated way than the molecules in the primitive ocean. What's more, living things have energy and can reproduce, while the chemicals on the Earth 4 billion years ago were lifeless.
After years of study, scientists figured out that living things, including human bodies, are basically made of amino acids and nucleotide bases. These are molecules with millions of hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen atoms. How could such complicated molecules have been formed in the primitive soup? Scientists were stumped.
Then, in 1953, two scientists named Harold Urey and Stanley L. Miller did a very simple experiment to find out what had happened on the Primitive Earth. They set up some tubes and bottles in a closed loop, and put in some of the same gases that were present in the atmosphere 4 billion years ago: water vapor, ammonia, carbon dioxide, methane, and hydrogen.
Then they shot an electric spark through the gases to simulate bolts of lightning on the ancient Earth, circulated the gases through some water, sent them back for more sparks, and so on. After seven days, the water that the gases had been bubbling through had turned brown. Some new chemicals were dissolved in it. When Miller and Urey analyzed the liquid, they found that it contained amino acids-the very kind of molecules found in all living things.
61. When did scientists come to realize how the atoms and molecules on the Earth combined to make living thing?
