We have had a class meeting today on whether we should give money to beggars and we have different opinions.

Some believe that we should give money to beggars because some of them are old people, who can’t live on their own. Among them are also some students who have dropped out of school because their families are so poor. And we can also see some disabled people. So we should give money to those who need our help badly.

On the other hand, however, many more students think we shouldn’t give them money because most of the beggars beg not because they are poor but because they want to make money more easily. They are not real beggars. Besides, to give money would encourage them to be lazy even if they have the ability to work.

In general, we should help the people of the inferior group but when we give money we should be careful.

2

Senior middle school graduates of our school have different opinions on how to choose their courses and universities.

About 35%of the students believe the choice should be based on their own interests. They say interest is the mother of success. It is a miserable thing to have to spend most of your time studying what you have no interest in.

Most student(around 45%),however, insist that main consideration should be given to the needs of the society, for, they argue, not everyone can find the job they like best. Besides, interest can be born and lost.

Interestingly, there are about 20% of the students who find it difficult to make a choice and would rather depend on their parents or teachers to make a decision for them.

3

A recent survey shows that the health of the students in our school has been going from bad to worse in the past three years . The number of nearsighted students has increased from 78.2% in 2002 to 92.5% in 2005 , while that of overweight , from 36% to 52.4%. Nearly 10% more students lack sleep because of more homework to do . Besides , over 15% more students become mentally unhealthy .

To improve students’ health , we call for less homework . Only in this way can students get plenty of sleep and meanwhile prevent them from being nearsighted . Proper diets and exercise should also be paid attention to so that they won’t easily put on weight . With their heavy burdens removed , students can then keep in normal mental health .

Dear Chen Li,

I’m glad to hear from you. You asked me about the difficulties you may meet with when you get here in UK. Now,I’d like to tell you something about it.

First, you may have the problem about the language you think you are well prepared. You may find it difficult to communication with the natives, because many of them have a strong accent. Besides, you may not get used to the western food here or even hate to have it. What’s more, you may feel lonely and miss your family and friends, especially in the very beginning.

However, you needn’t worry about it. Several weeks later, you will get used to everything here and love the place, and I’ll also try my best to help you when necessary.

Best wishes!

Yours,

Wang Ping

Dear Sir or Madam,

I’m very glad to read your advertisement for the Olympic volunteers for 2008. Having read your terms, I think I’m qualified for the job. I’m Li Hua, a healthy high school boy. By the year 2008, I will be over 18. Good at spoken English, I can communicate with foreigners freely. I’m always ready to help others and full of spirit of devotion. To do the work well as a volunteer, I’m willing to receive any necessary training, and will do whatever the OSCQ requires to. I’m sure, by then, I will be able to offer a 15-day service continuously. Believe me, I’ll make full preparations and will be an excellent volunteer.

Looking forward to your permission.

                                                                 Yours,

                                   Li Hua

Fast food

Fast food is becoming more and more popular in China, especially among children and teenagers.

There are several reasons for its popularity. First, it is very convenient and saves a lot of time. Second, you can either eat it there or take it away. Third, the environment of fast food restaurants is both clean and comfortable. However, in terms of nutrition, fast food is far from satisfactory. It is usually not a balanced diet and low in nutritional value.

Fast food is only a good choice when you are in a hurry and turn to it once in a while. It’s good for people, especially children, to eat fast food as little as possible.

Dear Jack,

I was very glad to receive your letter on the tenth of February. You ask me something about Lu Xun and his works since you began to study Chinese literature. Now let me tell you something about him. Lu Xun was a well-known Chinese writer, he was not only a writer, a thinker, and translator, but also a founder of modern Chinese literature. His novels have been put into many languages and some of the novels have been made into films, such as The True Story of AH Q and The New Year’s Sacrifice which expose sharply the old society. The late Chairman Mao spoke highly of him. Some of his novels have been collected in high school and college textbooks. Since you are learning Chinese literature, I think reading Lu Xun’s novels will benefit a lot.

                          Yours

Dear Sir (or Madam),

I have read your advertisement in the newspaper. You mentioned in your advertisement that

your instructors are fully qualified and you ensure that learners will be able to swim after one week’s training. Although I can swim a little, yet I am not very confident in the water. So I am interested in taking part in the training course. Fortunately, I have a seven-day holiday from October 1 to October 7. I would like to know when and where the course will be given, and how much the seven-day course costs. Besides, is there anything special that should be prepared or does your company provide everything necessary?

Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

                                                 Sincerely yours,

                                          Li Ming

Outer Space Explorations, YES or NO?

We had an argument over whether it was necessary to carry out outer space explorations at a class meeting the other day.

Some of us held it important to research the outer space because, first of all, people can get a better understanding of the outer space through their exploration. Second, new resources can be found there for human use. Third, this exploration can possibly bring about new living space for human life.

However, others think very differently. They said this kind of exploration is much too costly. Besides, it is very dangerous fro astronauts to do such work.

In my opinion, people should be pioneering and therefore such explorations into the outer space are worth trying out.

Dear editor,

I’m writing to tell you about the discussion we held on whether it is good to keep animals in zoos. Those who favor the idea think it provides chances for people to see wild animals. It might also develop people’s love for animals and nature. Besides, animals in zoos can be protected from danger in the wild.

However, those who are against the idea think that it’s a waste of money and labor to keep animals in the zoo. It’ll also damage the balance of nature. Animals will lose their freedom if caged in the zoo.

I personally feel it is wrong to take animals away from their natural living areas and keep them locked up.

                                                   Yours sincerely,

                                                        Li Hua

Dear Tom ,

It was great to hear from you again . There are many things going on in our school . In fact things have got much better since we started a different way of learning .

In the past our teachers stood in front of the class talking all the time while we students listened , busily taking notes . After a tiring day at school , we always had a lot of homework to do . Sometimes we even worked late into the night . Now we are active in class . We often have discussions in pairs or in groups . After class we enjoy all kinds of activities , such as going in for sports , dong experiments or surfing the Internet.

We are extremely happy about the changes in our studies .

All the best ,

Yours ,

Dear editor ,

At present , many high school students are addicted to buying lottery tickets and they seem to have good reasons . However , I’d like to talk about my views on the phenomenon .

In my opinion , its disadvantages are far more than its disadvantages , despite one of their reasons that they can do something useful for society in this way . High school students can’t support themselves financially but depend on their parents for the moment . Thus , in order to collect money with which to buy lottery tickets , they may try every possible means , even commit crimes .

In addition , if they put their minds on lottery tickets , their lessons will be affected more or less . And in the long run , lottery ticket purchasing will contribute to their wrong understanding that there must be a shortcut to every destination , which will surely do great harm to them the whole life .

Therefore , I think it is necessary for them to keep away from lottery stations and concentrate on their studies for now .

Yours ,

Li Hua

Dear editor ,

From the questionnaires we have received , we can find the following facts . Generally speaking , students who come from the city pent much more money than those from the country on average . For example , students from the city have spent twice as much money on snacks as students from the country . The figures also show that students from either the city or the country have spent most of their money on snacks , chothes and entertainments , and only a small sum of money has been spent on books and stationery . In my opinion , students from the city have spent too much on the whole . And I also think their money should be saved for books rather than spent on snacks or entertainments .

Yours ,

LiHua

With the development of the Internet, more and more people tend to send electronic cards instead of paper ones at festivals’ time. Compared with the traditional ones, electronic cards are more interesting and lively, for you can get not only pictures but also sound. Besides, it’s faster to send an electronic card and it can save money. There are many web sites on line where different varieties of cards are available. If none of these cards are of any interest to you, you can design cards of special style. More importantly, with the popularity of electronic cards, less paper is used for making paper cards, which contributes to the environment protection.

Every student will be faced with the question after he passes the college entrance examinations: Should I choose a good major or a good university first? Some students prefer to consider majors first so that they can learn what they are interested in. It will also make it possible for them to take their favorite jobs in the future. However, those who think differently believe that the environment is important to one’s development and that graduates from leading universities are often more likely to find a good job. In my opinion, the best choice is a good major at a good university. If we cannot obtain both, the first thing to consider is a good major, because no matter where we study, we can still achieve a lot in a certain field if we try our best.

Dear Grandpa,

Thank you for your letter and the check .It was really kind of you to send me so much money.

I spent one week at an ecology summer camp in the countryside .We did see a snake .Five of the boys drove it away .I was excited when they did it.

Thank you for your good wishes about my knee. That afternoon ,after I returned to school, I fell over on the stairs .It was not serious and it’s getting better now.

Since I am very interested in nature, I’ve decided to spend the money you sent me on a telescope .I can use it to observe natural things. Will that be all right?

    With lots of love,

                                                    Yours,

                                                    Xiaohua

I did a survey about school uniform. I asked some of my classmates what they thought about our uniform.

The majority like it. 60% of them say it is very fashionable and the color is nice. They think it is neat and tidy and a symbol for students. In some students’ opinion, when we wear our school uniforms, we feel equal and no need to follow fashion.

Others don’t like the school uniform. Some of them feel it is uncomfortable and the color is too dull. Some consider it old-fashioned. In they eyes of others, its style is very simple. The rest of them have no idea about it.

It’s important that we should take care of our eyes , otherwise we may get short-sighted. Now take Xiao Ming for example .Xiao Ming is a top student in our class. He likes reading very much. But he has a bad habit of Reading. The way he reads is wrong. He pays no attention to the care of his eyes. For example ,he reads in sunshine or moonlight :he often reads as he is walking or on a bus. Sometimes he reads as he is having a meal . Sometimes he even reads in bed . Day by day ,he has got something wrong with his eyes. He has become short-sighted . What an unlucky boy he is !

So I suggest that we should have the right way to read books to keep our good eyesight.

Dear paul,

It was great to hear from you and I’m very glad to tell you something about Beijing Olympic Mascots .

There are 5 Friendlies , or Fu Wa in Chinese , to serve as the Mascots for Beijing 2008 Olympic Games . Designed to express the nature of Chinese children, the 5 doll-like Frinedlies are symbols of four popular animals-the Fish , the Panda , the Tibetan Antelope , the Swallow –and the Olympic Flame . Each of the Friendlies has a Chinese name-Beibei , Jingjjing , Huanhuan , Yingying and Nini. When we put them together , they say Beijing Huan Ying Ni, or “Welcome to Beijing !” in English . These lovely dolls show us the Olympic spirit of universal friendship , and they each represent one of the following-the sea , forest ,f ire , earth and sky . As you can see , their colours have something to do with the 5 colours of the Olympic rings .

I really hope you may come to Beijing in 2008 ! Certainly I’ll be your company then ! Looking forward to your arrival !

Yours ,

Li Hua
