Passage 47

Hunters of the Insect World

About half of all insects lived on plants. The rest catch and kill other insects for food. They are the hunters of the insect world.

Each kind of hunter insect has a weapon. The dragonfly(蝴蝶) uses its legs as a basket to scoop up(抄上) other insects. The sand wasp has a stinger(针;刺)it uses to kill its victims.

Some hunter insects set traps. The tiger beetle digs a small hole and get in. Only its head is at the top of the hole. The tiger beetle(一种小甲虫) can stick its head out like jack-in-the-box(玩偶匣). It catches its victims by surprise.

The ant lion(蚁狮) digs a hole in the sand and waits at the bottom. When an ant or other insect gets near the hole, the sand gives away. The victim slides down into the jaws or the waiting ant lion.

The praying mantis(螳螂) is a large insect that looks as if it has arms. Its “arms” are really legs, but they are not used for walking. They are used to catch and hold its victims.

Man fights to keep down the numbers of insects that eat his food. Can you see how hunter insects help man?

Passage 46

Keeping Fit

Here is one person who really believes in keeping fit. Her name is Mrs. Laura Taylor. She is 45 but looks at least 10 years younger. Let’s 1isten to her story.

It all started about two years ago. In those days things were very different. I was overweight. I used to smoke a lot---about 30 cigarettes a day. I never got any exercise. I used to stay at home all day. I never went out into the fresh air, except to do the shopping. And even then I used to take the car. One day I looked at myself in the mirror.

"My God," I thought, "I look terrible!" I tried to touch my toes(脚趾). I couldn’t do it. I found an old dress. I couldn’t put it on. It was too small. Or rather, I was too fat. The next day I tried to jog(慢跑) a little. At first it was terrible. I mean I just couldn’t run. And at first people used to laugh at me. "Why are you running? Are you in a hurry?" they shouted.

But now I have changed the way I lived. I’ve stopped eating meat and I’ve started eating far more fresh vegetables. My husband and daughter have started that, too. At first they didn’t like the new food. But they’ve changed. About six months ago I sold my car and bought a bike. Recently I’ve started doing yoga exercises. My husband often goes cycling with me now and my daughter jogs with me in the evening. They’ve both lost weight and are much healthier than they used to be, too.
