“I first began to learn Chinese ten years ago from a cheerful middle-aged visiting scholar from Sichuan , who was living at the time in my apartment building in Boston . He was a great talker , and often our lessons would turn into lengthy digressions(离题)on various aspects(方面) of the Chinese culture . The very first two Chinese characters he taught me to write were the characters in the world for “population”, “ renkou”. I vividly remember that he pointed to the characters on the page and said ,“You see , people –mouths . Since China has a billion people to feed , this word naturally picks out the mouth as the most important part. And this can give you an important clue to the Chinese personally . Food is never far from our mind .
As I came to know more about China and Chinese people over the next few years . I found that his observation was indeed accurate(精确的) : Chinese people not only think a lot about food , they are in fact obsessed(迷住) with it . The result is that Chinese culture is often characterized as a “shiwenhua”-“food-culture”. Chinese people do not kid around when it comes to food .
My first direct exposure(暴露) to this aspect of China came when I attended a Chinese banquet during a trip to Beijing in 1998 . In the United States I had eaten Chinese food often , but I could not have imagined how fabulous(传统上的)and extravagant (奢侈的)a real Chinese banquet could be .

“Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way…” goes the popular Christmas tune. With the song in my head, I felt a bit sorry for myself.Instead of rushing back and forth across a freezing school campus, I could have had a cozy Christmas dinner at home or enjoyed the fabulous fireworks lighting up campus at night. But this Christmas would not be celebrated as usual.
One month ago, all six girls in my dormitory (including me) had made detailed plans for a more-exciting-than-ever Christmas holiday. But one day we received an unusual mission:we were asked to organize a party that would be a fund-miser for mentally disabled children from the hospital. The children would perform on stage while volunteers offered food to the spectators (观众) and collect some money for the organization.
Naturally, we were supposed to support the idea wholeheartedly, and we did.But wait-the date of the show was set right on Christmas Eve! lifts meant that all our original Christmas plans would have to be set aside.
However, we took the plunge into preparations for the party. We spared no effort in organizing, designing, propagandizing, making contacts with the potential sponsors, negotiating and so on.We went through thick and thin and finally made it, though with a bit of reluctance.
Finally, Christmas Eve arrived. As I dragged myself into the auditorium after another day of hard work, I detected the notes of a beautiful Christmas song that immediately filled me with happiness.I looked to find the source of the song- it was a group of children singing onstage.Though disabled, they appeared extraordinarily earnest and sincere in front of the audience.Everyone attending was deeply moved by the sight.People wanted to donate some money or show their support. The performers earned recognition and respect from all of us.
At that point, I found all that I had done in the one-month time was worthwhile. And all the volunteers who had been participation in this Christmas party shared the same feeling: the tree meaning of Christmas was giving and receiving love from one another.
