Rock and roll music star Elvis Presley was photographed many thousands of times
when he was alive, but was never pictured on a patchwork quilt.
American artist Marcia Ente has now created (创造) a picture of Elvis Preskey in the form of a patchwork quilt. The quilt is made up of 3650 small (2.5 centimeter square) pieces of calico(花布) material, all sewn by hand. The quilt, which measures just over one meter wide by nearly 1.7 meters long, is worth $ US 2000 and hangs in a Boston art gallery (廊) in the state of Massachusetts in America.
Marcia Ente began making quilts in 1975. She uses computer technology to get a picture of the subject divided into squares. These squares on the computer screen can be matched by small colored squares of material. Each quilt takes about 150 hours to finish, depending on how big it is and how complicated(复杂)the colors of the calico pieces.
Other famous people Marcia Ente has pictured on quilts are the scientist Albert Einstein, film stars Marilyn Monroe, Rita Hayworth and Bette Davis, pop artist Andy Warhol and the subject of Leonardo da Vinic's famous painting, the Mona Lisa.

Dear Sir,
Just over six months ago, I saw an advertisement in the Morning Mail for a set of the complete works of William Shakespeare. Your company, Cosmo Books Ltd., offered
this set (eight books of plays and two books of poetry) at what was claimed(宣传) to be remarkable price: fifteen pounds and fifty pence, including postage and packing. I had wanted a set of Shakespeare's plays and poems for some time, and these books, in red imitation (a copy of the real thing) leather, looked particularly attractive; so I sent for them.
Two weeks later, the books arrived, together with a set of the complete works of
Charles Dickens, which I had not ordered. So I returned the Dickens' books to you,
with a check for fifteen pounds and fifty pence for the works of Shakespeare Two more weeks passed. The there arrived on my door step a second set of the plays of Moliere, in French. since I do not read French, these were of no use to me at all. However, I could not afford to post all these books back to you. so I wrote to you at the end of August of last year, reforming you to come and collect all the books that I did not want, and asking you not send any other books until further notice.
You did not reply to that letter. Instead you sent me a bill for forty two pounds, and a set of the plays of Schiller, in German. Since then, a new set of books has arrived every two weeks, the works of Goethe, the poems of Milton, the plays of Stringberg; I hardly know what I have. The books are still in their boxes, in the garage, and my car has to stand in the rain outside.
I have no room for any more books. and even if I read from now until the Last Judgement, I should not finish reading all the books that you have sent me. Please send no more books, send no more bills, send no more angry letters demanding payment. Just send one large lorry and take all the books away, leaving me only with the one set of
the complete works of Shakespeare for which I have paid.

Beijing received 21 millimeters of rain on Sunday, amounting to a month's average in a single day, sources from the Beijing Observatory said yesterday.
The heavy rain was caused by the joint influence of a cold front from Inner Mongolia and a warm, humid (潮湿) current from southern China, said Li Tingfu, chief engineer at the Beijing Observatory.
The air front is now moving toward Tianjin and the Bohai Bay bringing rain.
The ram started at 6:00 am on Sunday and intensified(增加强度)between 8:00 pm and mid-night, with winds of 5-6 force and a drop of temperature.
Sources from the Beijing Traffic Administration Burean said the rain caused many traffic accidents in Beijing, including one involving (卷入) four cars on a road near the East Third Ring Road.
Li said that in the next few days, the temperature will rebound(弹回,恢复) as the

Welcome, everybody,
Merry Christmas to you all! Thank you for your coming tonight to celebrate this happy and joyous occasion.
Christmas is really a wonderful time of the year, and there is something in this holiday to appeal to everybody. For myself, I love the pretty decoration (装饰) that can be seen everywhere. See how wonderful this room looks with all the bright reds and greens everywhere I know of a fact that my friend over there, Mr. Kane, appreciates Christmas food the most, especially the roast (烤) turkey that can be made during the season. And Miss Wells over there likes Christmas because of all the presets she gets from her boyfriend.
There is another reason for liking Christmas, a reason that we should all try to remember Christmas is the time of brotherhood. At Christmas, we all think more of our fellow men, we are all kind to each other, and we all become generous and warm to each other in the spirit of the season. This is a wonderful attitude to have, and we all feel the better for it. How miraculous it would be if we could keep this spirit all through the year.
Merry Christmas once again to all of you !
