Born in 1880,Hellen Keller was an American woman writer with disabilities. At the age of nineteen months she was robbed by illness of sight and hearing and became mute. Fortunately when she was seven years old, Miss Sullivan came to work as her teacher. Though almost blind, herself, she managed to help Helen learnt to read, write and talk. At the age of twenty-four, Helen graduated from Radcliffe College with honours. Helen wrote many books, such as The Story of My Life, Let’s Have Faith and so on. Besides, she devoted all her life to working for the blind and the deaf-mute both at home and abroad. Helen’s example has encouraged many people whether they are healthy or handicapped.

(Text 1)

M: Do you live in that tall building?

W: Yes. My room is on the third floor.

M: Me, too.

(Text 2)

M: Excuse me, Lucy. May I have my dictionary back?

W: Sony, Jack. Mary is using it now.

(Text 3)

M: Hi, Susan. You’re looking great. New skirt?

W: Thanks, Bob. No, I’ve had this skirt for a long time. I bought these shoes this morning. Do you like them?

M: Yes, very nice. They look good with that skirt.

(Text 4)

M: Are you free today, Kelly?

W: Oh, yes. No school and no homework. I’m going to swim this afternoon.

(Text 5)

W: Table for three, please.

M: Do you want the table near the window?

W: Yes, please.

M: I’ll get you a menu right away.

(Text 6)

M: I’d like to get a room, please. Just for the weekend.

W: Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights?

M: That’s right. I’ll be leaving early Monday morning.

W: We have single rooms with a bath. They’re on the third floor, facing the sea.

M: What’s the price?

W: Thirty dollars a day.

M: Do you have anything for less?

W: No, but you’ll find these rooms comfortable. Each room has a telephone and they all have TV sets.

M: OK, I think it’s all right with me.

(Text 7)

W: What a great day, isn’t it?

M: I guess so. I didn’t notice. I feel terrible because I watched TV until after midnight last night.

W: After midnight! I usually watch TV only if I have nothing better to do.

M: Well, I watched so long because I was unhappy. I left my meal rickets in the dining room. There’s more than fifty dollars worth of meal rickets lost.

W: So did watching TV make you feel better?

M: Well, I felt a bit better while I was watching. You know, it took my mind off my troubles. But after I turned the TV off, I just felt even worse with myself for wasting so much time.

W: I understand. I’ve had that kind of feeling before.

(Text 8)

M: Good afternoon. I believe this house is for sale. May I have a look at it, please?

W: Yes, of course. Let me show you around it. I’ve lived here since my son was born, and he’s 30.

M: Oh, that’s quite a long time. Then why do you want to sell it?

W: I’ve just retired. I want to buy a small house in the countryside where it’s quiet and the air is fresh.

M: How much do you want for it?

W: $150,000.

M: That’s a lot of money. Can. you bring it down?

W: I’m sorry but I think it’s worth the price.

M: Well, I like the house but I can’t decide before my wife sees it for herself.

W: Women always have the last word.

(Text 9)

M: Is it true that you don’t swim at all now?

W: Fin afraid so. I’m too old.

M: But you are only 20.

W: That’s too old for a swimmer. If I swam in an international competition now, I wouldn’t win. So I’d rather not swim at all.

M: But don’t you enjoy swimming?

W: I used to, when I was small. But if you enter for big competitions you have to work very hard. I used to get up at 6 to go to the pool. I had to train before school, after school and at weekends. I swam thirty-five miles every week!

M; But you were already famous at fifteen. And look at all those cups.

W: It’s true that I have some wonderful memories. Olympics were very exciting. But I missed some important things too. While other girls were playing, I was swimming.

(Text 10)

Mr King lived with six hundred wild animals on the Greek Island of Kyklos. Ever since he left school, he had traveled all over the world collecting animals for his own zoo. He hoped to have two examples of every kind of animal on his island.

He wrote books about his travels and his animals. The money got from the books helped to pay for the animals’ food.

One day, when Mr King was out looking for drinking water, he found oil. He needed money for his travels and for his zoo, and he knew a little oil would buy enough water for himself and his animals, but he also knew that if he told anybody else about what he found, it would be the end of his zoo and his life’s work.
