When you are in Britain, you should know the rules for eye contact. In dealing with strangers the rule for British society is that you must not stare at them but at the same time you cannot take no notice of them. Passing strangers in the street, you may look at the strangers until they are about eight feet away, then your glances must turn away as they pass. Generally speaking strangers feel comfortable looking at one another at a distance. The closer they are, the greater the tendency to avoid eye contact. This can be observed in a crowded lift where strangers’ glances fly from one spot to another.
However, British practice needs eye contact when they are communicating with each other. There is a saying in English , “Don’t trust anyone who won’t look at you in the eye.” Not looking at the person could mean a number of things, including fear, contempt, uneasiness, guilt or indifference. Even for a lecturer speaking to his audience there is plenty of eye contact. But this is not to say that people talking to one another will look directly into one another’s eyes all the time. British people normally look at the other person’s eyes much longer when they are listening than when speaking. When they are about to stop speaking and start listening they look at the other person’s eyes to signal they are about to change role.
Staring at people is considered rude in Britain and young children will be scolded by their parents if they look long at another person. Many English people traveling to some countries find being looked at very uncomfortable.
So, dear friends, when you are in England, you should know when you should look at others and when you shouldn’t.

Do you know why different animals or pests have their special colors? Colors in them seem to be used mainly to protect themselves.
Some birds like eating locusts, but birds cannot easily catch them. Why? It is because locusts change their colors together with the change of the colors of crops. When crops are green, locusts look green. But as the harvest time comes, locusts change to the same brown color as crops have. Some other pests with different colors from plants are easily found and eaten by others. So they are to hide themselves for lives and appear only at night.
If you study the animal life, you’ll find the main use of coloring is to protect themselves. Bears, lions and other animals move quietly through forests. They cannot be easily seen by hunters. This is because they have the colors much like the trees.
Have you ever noticed an even more strange act? A kind of fish in the sea can send out a kind of very black liquid when it faces danger. While the liquid spreads over, its enemies cannot find it. And it immediately swims away. So it has lived up to now though it is not strong at all.

I spent two months with an American family last year when I studied in America. It is said, ‘The best house is in the U.S.A., the best wife is in Japan, and the best food is in China.’ So I took 31 and pleasure to 32 ‘the best food’ for my American family. Each day, regardless of(不管, 不顾) my poor skill of cooking, I performed my play in 33 way:changing the dishes’ color, the meat’s type or the soup’s style. Thus my American friends could discover the 34 of eating Chinese food. Because of my ‘ 35 ’ job, I was often rewarded by their 36 of appreciation such as ‘very tasty’, ‘excellent’, etc.
But the joke was here:yesterday, I cooked Sichuan-style 37 for dinner. I was 38 at my achievement. When all the family members arrived at the table, they first looked 39 at the fish, and then looked at me. ‘Why do all the fish have their 40 ?’ They asked, ‘It’s horrible!’
Horrible or beautiful?I don’t know. But I 41 know that fish heads are delicious. The 42 is the best part of fish;in 43 only the respectable guest can have the special 44 of enjoying it.
Another 45 thing is:the American friends often said to me ‘ 46 ’as they 47 fruits or other things. According to Chinese tradition, I would simply smile in answer to their kindness 48 helping myself to any of the food. 49 , I said ‘help yourself’ to them whenever I brought home fruits. Dear me, no matter how much or how often I brought home food, as long as it was nice to their taste, they 50 hesitated to use their hands to ‘help themselves’ until all was finished.
