Cairo is a big city in Egypt with a long history. It is the largest city in the Middle East.
My visit was within days of Ramadan, when Muslims eat nothing from sunrise to sunset. Interestingly, people needed more food during Ramadan than at any other time of a year, and the citizens of Cairo certainly knew how to celebrate their evening meals. As I walked through the streets, the sweet smells of cooked meat mixed with clouds of smoke from the men’s pipes. Party boats traveled up and down the river, as people on boats danced and sang to the music.
I was surprised by the number of Cairo citizens who spoke English. They warmly welcomed me to their city. "It’s good to see Americans visiting us,"one man told me. Unfortunately, the happiest people to see me were the crowds of sales-people and strange guides, who depended on tourism to make money. Tourists who were interested in their goods or services must try their best to make them cut down the price. If they were not interested, they must say so very firmly.
Just a few hours into my first night in Cairo, I had an unexpected wake-up call. At 4:30 a.m., the mosque next door made the morning call to the Muslims over its loudspeakers. I stepped out of my room and watched as Muslims facing east prayed5, as they had done for centuries.
