C

On school days, students get out of bed at 7 a.m. They wash their faces and eat breakfast. The simplest breakfast is a bowl of dried cereal (麦片) with fruit and milk.

Then they dress, brush their teeth, comb(梳理)hair, put their books in a backpack, and go to school. Nearly all students walk or take a yellow school bus. Very few ride bicycles. When they arrive at 8:30 a.m., they meet their friends and talk about their interesting things.

At noon or 12 o’clock, the students eat lunch at school. The usual lunch must have some meat, vegetable, fruit, bread, and a drink. However, students prefer hot dogs and hamburgers. American children like to have a small piece of cake after the meal.

Students do not have a short sleep in the afternoon. After lunch, they go to the schoolrooms until 3 o’clock. They take classes for six hours each day and then return home.

Parents allow their children to play or watch TV until supper at 6 a.m. After supper, they do their homework. Sometimes there is a family activity. Children can be with both parents after dinner.

On the weekend, there are two days for activities. Students will spend Saturday shopping with their friends or take a four-hour trip with their family to visit grandparents or go to a park for a picnic. On Sunday, most families go to church in the morning and have a large dinner at 1 p.m. Often, friends or grandparents will join the family. It is a good way to end the week for parents and children before the next week when school and work begin again.

B

A year ago, I paid no attention to English idioms, though my teacher emphasized (强调) the importance again and again. But soon, the importance of English idioms(习语) was shown in an amusing experience.

One day, I happened to meet an Englishman on the road, and soon we began to talk. As I was talking about how I was studying English, the foreigner seemed to be astonished. Gently shaking his head, shrugging his shoulders, he said , “You don’t say!” “You don’t say!” I was puzzled. I thought, perhaps this is not an appropriate topic(适当的话题).

“Well, I had better change the topic.”So I said to him,“Well, shall we talk about the Great Wall. By the way, have you ever been there? ”“Certainly, everyone back home will laugh at me if I leave China without seeing it. It was great.”He was deep in thought when I began to talk like a tourist guide.“The Great Wall is one of the wonders in the world. We are very proud of it.”Soon I was stopped again by his words:“You don’t say!”

I couldn’t help asking, “Why do you ask me not to talk about it?”“Well, I didn’t ask you to do so.”He answered, greatly surprised. I said, “Didn’t you say ‘You don’t say’?”

Hearing this, the Englishman laughed to tears. He began to explain,“‘You don’t say’actually means ‘really’.” It is an expression of surprise. Perhaps you don’t pay attention to English idioms.” Only then did I know I had made a fool of myself. Since then I have been more careful with idiomatic expressions.

Remember:What the English teachers said is always right to us student.
