W:Hello.

M:Hi.Sally.This is Phil.

W:Great to hear from you, Phil. How have you been doing?

M:To tell you the truth, I'm very worried about our final examination next month. For one thing I can't sleep.

W:I understand.I went through the same thing last year.

M:That's exactly why I'm calling you.Do you have any suggestions for dealing with anxiety? You know how I hate exams.

W:Well, last year the university offered a stress management course at about this time.Have you been in contact with the student help services?

M:No.I haven't had time.

W:Funny, isn't it? Just when students need help most,we can't afford time to get it.

M:Well, perhaps I should find out more about this stress management course.

W:I suggest you call the health services tomorrow. They open at 9:00 am.

M:Thanks, Sally.

W:Do you ever eat fast food?

M:Yes.

W:What kind of fast food do you normally eat?

M:Oh,hamburgers,sandwiches, well,sometimes a pizza.

W: Oh, right. And how often do you eat fast food?

M:Er, well Monday to Friday when I'm working, every day,um,but not usually on the weekends.

W:And what time of the day do you eat fast food?

M:Well,at work as I said,at lunchtime.Sometimes, you know, if I'm going out and I've no time to cook in the evening then I'll send out for a pizza.

W:And what do you think of fast food? Which statement do you think is true? “It's convenient”?

M:Sure, that's sort of the main reason that I eat it.We're paying for the convenience;you know the speed of it.

W:Right.How about“It tastes good”?

M:Yeah.Um,I mean, not as good as food in a good restaurant.but it's not bad.

W:It's good for you?

M:No.The food itself isn't very good for us.There are not enough greens,um,you know vegetables or salad.

In l 896, Einstein went to college to study physics. There he met a girl from Hungary. They studied in the same class and the same interest in physics brought them together and they became good friends. Before long they fell in lore.In l 903 when Einstein was 24, he married Marits, who was 4 years older than he.

After their marriage Einstein devoted himself to the research of the great theory. To give her husband more help, Marits gave up her own work, and became a good wife and assistant. She tried her best to encourage him whenever possible. She was sure her husband would succeed. They often discussed the theory while walking outside or sitting together in the room. They even did that in their letters when one of them was away from their home.

In l914, Einstein moved to Berlin in Germany and settled down there. At that time his theory proved to be correct and he had become famous all over the world. But it was not long before the First World War broke out.Marits as well as her two sons, who was on holiday in Switzerland, couldn't come back to Berlin any more. The war not only stopped Einstein's work but also broke up the warm, happy family. In l9l9.their marriage ended at last.

Captain Stone was an officer in charge of training soldiers. The officer was very strict with his soldiers in everything.Once he was talking to some soldiers whom he was going to train. He had never seen them before, so his introduction was,“My name is Stone.and I'm even harder than stone,So do what I tell you.or there will be trouble.Don't try to break me.Then we'll get on well together.”

Then he went to the soldiers one after another and asked them his name.“Speak loudly so that everyone can hear clearly,”he said,“and don't forget to call me‘sir’.”

Each soldier told him his name, until he came to the last one. This man remained silent, and so Captain Stone shouted at him,“When I ask you any question, answer it.I will ask you again. What's your name, soldier?"

This time the soldier had to answer the question. He was very much afraid, but at last he replied in a low voice,“My name is Stone Breaker, sir.”

Dear fellow students,

Our school is preparing to help students develop good habits. But there is a serious phenomenon in our school-some students are spending too much money on snacks.

Eating snacks is a waste of money. It’s also a bad habit that we should get rid of. In addition, most snacks have too much fat and sugar. They are unhealthy food. Eating snacks may lead to fatness and illness. To make matters worse, some students litter the food wrappers everywhere.

As high school students, we shouldn’t act as little children any more. Dear fellow students, let’s form good eating habits and say no to snacks!

Death Valley ls one of the most famous deserts In the United States, covering a wide area with its alkali sand.Almost 20 percent of this area is well below sea level, and Badwater, a salt water pool, is about 280 feet below sea level and the lowest point in the United States.

C

Goal chances came and goal chances went. But two of the world’s highest-ranked teams-with some of football’s highest-paid players-couldn’t get the ball into the net. And they were playing against sides that only just made it to the World Cup.

With two defeats, one draw(平局)and no goals, France collected its newest title since rising to the top of the game four years ago: the worst defending champion in World Cup history.

“I’m very disappointed, it’s the end of a beautiful story,” said a French striker David Trezeguet. “The story began in 1998 and ended today against Denmark.”

France won the 2000 European Championships and was ranked the best team on the planet before the World Cup.

Besides the goalposts and crossbars seeming to be against this unlucky team, France’s game plan has been the same for four years so opponents (competitors) know it by heart.

Senegal, an African team playing in its first World Cup, surprised everyone by beating France in the opening World Cup match before entering the second round successfully.

Uruguay and Denmark followed a similar strategy to stop France, creating a defensive barrier(屏障)and launching many counter-attacks.

Following France, Argentina became the second big-name to take an early plane home from this year’s World Cup.

The South Americans were expected to become world champions for a third time. This was particularly

because of an impressive display when they lost just one of their 18 qualifying matches.

The team’s 1-0 loss to England on June 7 was the beginning of a nightmare for the players. But even after this surprising defeat, they never thought that they would be going home so soon. But a 1-1 draw in Argentina’s final group match against Sweden made the unexpected a reality.

56.By saying “two of the world’s highest-ranked teams” in the first paragraph, it means

A.Senegal and Denmark B.Uruguay and Denmark

C.England and Sweden D.France and Argentina

57.Which of the following statements about the French team is NOT true?

A.The French team won a great victory in 2000.

B.The French team got its title “the worst defending champion in World Cup history” four

    years ago in 1998.

C.The French team was the champions in the last World Cup.

D.In this World Cup, French team’s balls hit the goalposts and crossbars.

58.From the passage we know .

A.France was defeated first by Denmark and then by Senegal

B.Uruguay beat France and was defeated by Denmark

C.England beat Argentina and drew the next one

D.Sweden didn’t beat Argentina but kicked it out

59.The underlined word “strategy” refers to .

A.the way to persuade others to follow them

B.the purpose with which they joined in the games

C.the art of planning operation in matches

D.the suggestion the people of their own made

60.Argentina was expected to become world champions because .

A.they won almost all the games in the tryout(预赛)

B.they had won champions in World Cup three times

C.they lost the game to England only by 1-0

     D.they beat a strong opponent-Sweden
