  Write a letter of apology(道歉信)

Directions: One of your pen friends will soon be visiting your city. For some reasons, you can’t manage to meet him at the airport on time. Write a letter asking him to wait for you at the airport and tell him how to recognize(认出) you (over 80 words).

磁带录音:

W: Well, anything I can help you with?

M: Oh yes, sure. You know I’ll attend some courses on marketing at this university next week. Could you please tell me what the course requirements are? I mean , how much work is expected for these courses?

W: OK. First you have to complete a paper.

M: What does that involve?

W: Well, it’s a piece of work on a given topic based on some set reading texts. You’ll have to give a small talk to your group…

M: How long does that have to be?

W: About 25 minutes generally. And then you have to write up your piece of work and give it to the lecturer. After that you will receive a mark from the lecturer.

M: Right. And is that all?

W: No. You also have to complete a 300-word essay on a topic, which you can choose for yourself.

M: That sounds not bad.

W: In addition to that there is an exam.

M: An exam! What sort of exam?

W: Well, it’s an open book exam, in which you can have the textbook with you.

Complete the form. Write ONE WORD for each answer.

磁带录音:

Blanks 10 through 12 are based on the following conversation.

M: You must be pretty excited about your trip to Europe. When is it that you are leaving?

W: In three weeks, and I am excited! But there are still a few things I need to do before I go.

M: Like what?

W: Like reviewing my passport, going to the travel agency to buy my plane tickets, and figuring out what to do with my apartment while I’m gone.

M: You are not going to give it up, are you?

W: No way! I’ll never find another apartment around here. But I don’t like the idea of paying the rent of three months on an empty apartment, either.

M: Perhaps you could lend it to someone.

W: Yes, but who to?

M: Hm, let me think. Oh , I know just a person. A colleague of mine Jim Thomas is coming here to do some research this summer from June to August.

W: Well, that’s exactly when I’m away! It sounds ideal.

M: I’ll call Jim anyway, and I’ll mention it to him then.

W: Well, thanks, Bill. Let me know what happens.

C

In the second half of each year, many powerful storms are born in the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean seas. Of these, only about half a dozen generate the strong, circling winds of 75 miles per hour or more that give them hurricane(飓风) status, and several usually make their way to the coast. There they cause millions of dollars of damage, and bring death to large numbers of people.

The large storms that hit the coast start as harmless circling disturbances hundreds-even thousand-of miles out to sea. As they travel aimlessly over water warmed by the summer sun, they are carried westward by the trade winds. When condition are just right, warm, moist air flows in at the bottom of such a disturbance, moves upward through it and comes out at the top. In the process, the moisture in this warm air produces rain and with it the heat that is converted to energy in the form of strong winds. As the heat increase, the young hurricane begins to swirl(旋转) in a counter-clock-wise motion.

The average life of a hurricane is only about nine days, but it contains almost more power that we can imagine. The energy in the heat released by a hurricane’s rainfall in a single day would satisfy the entire eletrical needs of the United States for more than six months. Water, not wind, is the main source of death and destruction in a hurricane. A typical hurricane brings 6 to 12 inches downpours resulting in sudden floods. Worst of all is the powerful movement of the seat--- the mountains of water moving toward the low-pressure hurricane center. The water level rises as much as 15 feet above normal as it moves toward shore.

67. When is an ordinary tropical storm called a hurricane?

  A. When it begins in the Atlantic and Caribbean seas.

  B. When it hits the coastline.

  C. When its winds reach 75 miles wide

  D. When it is more than 75 miles wide

68.2. What is the worst thing about hurricanes?

69. The count-clock-wise swirling of the hurricane is brought

 about by ______.

  A. the low-pressure area in the center of the storm

  C. the trade winds

  D. the increasing heat
