A report on the prevention of AIDS by the Ministry of Health shows that the infected population has risen by a shocking 16.7 percent in the first six months of 2002 compared with the same period in 2001, according to a report in the Beijing Youth Daily.
Since China diagnosed its first AIDS sufferer in 1985, the country has now entered a period of rapid growth of AISS. Up to now, one million people have been infected with the AIDS virus and the figure is expected to rise to 10 million in 2010 if the government fails to take proper action.
The number of people infected with AIDS in China is the fourth largest in Asia and 17th in the world, according to the World Health Organization.
Intravenous (静脉内的) drug addicts (吸毒人员) accounted for nearly 70 percent of all the AIDS patients. However, venereal transmission (性传播)is increasing the HIV- infected population with each passing year and is expected to become the main cause of AIDS in China going by the experience of most other countries. The great mobility (流动) of the population also serve as a catalyst(催化剂) for the widening spread of the disease. According to the fifth demographic census (人口普查), there was a floating population of 120 million in China, mostly young people. The lack of knowledge about AIDS and venereal diseases generally makes this group particularly subject to infection.
