Insect's lives are very short and they have many enemies, but they must survive long enough to breed and continue their kind. The less insect like what they look, the better their chance to survive. To look "inedible" by resembling or imitating plants or objects that hold no interested for their enemies is a trick widely practiced by insects. Mammals rarely use this type of concealment, but many fish do.

The stick caterpillar (毛毛虫) is well named: It is hardly distinguishable from a brown or green twig (a small branch of a tree). This caterpillar is quite common and can be found almost anywhere in North America. It is also called “measuring worm "or "inchworm". It walks by bending its body, then stretching out and grasping the branch with its front feet, then bending its body again to bring his hind feet forward. When danger threatens, the stick caterpillar stretches its body away from the branch at an angle and remains firm and still, like a twig, until the danger has passed.

Walkingsticks, or stick insects, do not have to assume a firm, twiglike pose to find protection. They look like inedible twigs in any position. There are many kinds of walkingsticks, ranging in size from the few inches of the North American variety to some tropical species that may be over a foot long. When at rest their front legs are stretched out, imitating the thorny (带刺的) bushes or trees in which they live.

Leaves also seem to be a favorite object for insects to imitate. Many butterflies can suddenly disappear from view by holding their wings and sitting quietly among the leaves that they resemble.

Have you ever been afraid to talk back when you were treated unfairly? Have you ever bought something just because the salesman talked you into it? Are you afraid to ask someone for a date?

Many people are afraid of assert themselves, that is to say they dare not state their opinions confidently. Dr. Albert, author of Stand Up, Speak Out, and Talk Back, thinks it is because their self-respect is low. "Our whole set up (体制) is designed to make people distrust themselves," says Albert. "There is always 'superior' around a parent, a teacher, a boss who 'knows better'. There superiors often gain when they chip(破碎) away at your self-image."

But Albert and other scientists are doing something to help people assert themselves. They offer "assertiveness training" courses --- AT for short. In the AT comes people learn that they have a right to be themselves. They learn to speak out and feel good about doing so. They learn to be more active without hurting other people.

In one way, learning to speak out is to overcome fear. A group taking an AT course will help the timid person to lose his fear. But AT uses an even stronger motive ---- the need to share. The timid person speaks out in the group because he wants to tell how he feels.

Whether or not you speak up for yourself depends on your self-image. If someone you face is more "important" than you, you may feel less of a person. You start to doubt your own good sense.

You go by the other person's demand. But, why should you? AT says you can get to feel good about yourself. And once you do, you can learn to speak out.
