For most people, shopping is still a matter of wandering down the street or loading a cart in a shopping mall. Soon, that will change. Electronic commerce is growing fast and will soon bring people more choices. There will, however, be a cost: protecting the consumer from being cheated will be harder. Many governments therefore want to apply strict regulations to the electronic world. But politicians would be wiser to see cyberspace as a basis for a new era (时代) of corporate self-regulation.
Consumers in rich countries have grown used to the idea that the government takes responsibility for everything from the stability of the banks to the safety of the drugs or their rights to refund (退款)when goods are faulty. But governments cannot enforce national laws on businesses whose only presence is on the screen. Even in a country where a clear right to compensation exists, the on-line customer in Tokyo, say, can hardly go to New York to get a refund for a clothes purchase.
One answer is for government to cooperate more: to recognize each other’s rules. But that requires years of work and volumes of detailed rules. And plenty of countries have rules too fanciful for other countries to accept. There is, however, another choice. Let the electronic businesses do the regulation themselves. They do, after all, have a self-interest in doing so.
In electronic commerce, reputation for honest dealing will be a valuable competitive asset. Governments, too, may compete to be trusted. For instance, customers ordering medicines on-line may prefer to buy from the United States because they trust the rigorous screening(严格的审查) of the Food and Drug Administration; or they may decide that the FDA’s rules are too strict, and buy from Switzerland instead.
Customers will still need to use their judgment. But precisely because the technology is new, electronic shoppers are likely for a while to be a lot more cautious than customers of the normal sort. And the new technology will also make it easier for them to complain when a company lets them down. In this way, at least, the advent of cyberspace may argue for fewer consumer protection laws, not more.
77. According to the author, what will be the best policy for electronic commerce?
A. Self-regulation by the businesses.
B. Strict consumer protection laws.
C. Close international cooperation.
D. Government protection.
78. In the author’s view, businesses would place a high emphasis on honest dealing because in the electronic world ________.
A. international cooperation would be much more frequent.
B. consumers could easily seek government protection
C. a food reputation is a great advantage in competition
D. it would be easy for consumers to complain
79.We can infer from the passage that in licensing new drugs the FDA in the United States is ___________.
A. very quick B. very cautious C. very slow D. rather careless
80.If a customer buys something that does not meet his expectation, what is the advantage of dealing through electronic- commerce over the present normal one?
A. It will be easier for him to return the goods he is not satisfied with.
B. It will be easier for him to get the refund from the seller.
C. It will be easier for him to get his complaints heard by other consumers.
D. It will be easier for him to complain about this to the government.

Scientists have uncovered the exact difference between man and mouse. Teams of scientists from around the world will publish today the draft (草图) genome (基因组) of the mouse, which enables them for the first time to compare another mammal’s entire DNA directly with that of humans.
The similarities are far greater than the differences-man and mouse share a common ancestor that lived more than 70 million years ago-which has allowed scientists to find treatments for a good many human diseases.
British members of the project say the draft mouse genome, published in the journal Nature, has provided the “phrasebook” for scientists to translate the language of the human genome.
“The entire biomedical research community can for the first time fully use this resource to deal with human diseases. They will now have powerful tools that will serve them for many years to come,” said Dr. Jane Rogers at the Welcome Trust Institute in Cambridge, which did 20 percent of the work.
Comparisons show almost every gene in the mouse has a corresponding(对应的) gene in humans - a 99 percent similarity that should help to find how each human gene works. Already the work has been able to show that man and mouse each have about 30, 000 genes, yet only 300 or so are unique to either species, increasing the value of the lab mouse as a “model” for human genetics.
This is an extraordinary milestone. For the first time we have an opportunity to see ourselves in an evolutionary (进化论) mirror. The mouse genome stands for a very important chapter in the lab notebook of evolution. By taking away genes to create sick mice, scientists have been able to reproduce a number of human disorders. Knowing the entire genomes of humans and mice will enable them to employ the technique more widely, leading to a rapid development in the understanding of illnesses.
73.Scientists have found that _______.
A. men and mice are actually the same kind animal
B. mice are actually the ancestors of human beings
C. the genome of the mouse is the same as that of humans
D. humans and mice most probably have developed from the same ancestor

B. it will be easier for people to find the causes of human diseases and cure them.
C. it has enable the scientists to compare human DNA with that of another mammal.
D. it makes it possible for man to understand the complicated language of his genome.
75.It can be inferred from the underlined sentence `that ________.
A. every gene of a mouse works in the same way as that of a human being
B. it has become easier for humans to find their real ancestor
C. more mice will be used in scientific experiments
D. scientists will use less mice in their experiments to protect them
76.Which of the following is the best title of the passage?
A. Mouse Book of Life May Provide Cures for Human Diseases.
B. Mice and Men Are the Same.
C. Man and Mouse Share a Common Ancestor.

It often happens that a number of applicants with almost identical qualifications and experience all apply for the same position. In their educational background, special skills and work experience, there is little, if anything, to choose between half a dozen candidates. How then does the employer make a choice?
There are many arguments for and against the interview as a selection procedure. The main argument against it is that it results in a wholly subjective decision. As often as not, employers do not choose best candidates, they choose the candidate who makes a good first impression on them. Some employers, of course, reply to his argument by saying that they have become so experienced in interviewing staff so that they are able to make a sound assessment of each candidate’s likely performance. The main argument in favor of the interview and it is, a good argument--is that an employer is concerned not only with a candidate’s ability, but with the suitability of his or her personality for the particular work situation. Many employers, for example will ignore occasional mistakes from their secretary provided she has a pleasant personality, character and social ability. Unfortunately, both for the employers and applicants for jobs, there are many people of great ability who simply do not interview well. There are also, of course, people who interview extremely well, but are later found to be very unsatisfactory employees. Candidates who interview well tend to be quietly confident, but never boastful; direct and straightforward in their questions and answers; cheerful and friendly, but never over familiar; and sincerely enthusiastic and optimistic. Candidates who interview badly tend to be at either end of the spectrum(范围) of human behavior. They are either very shy or overconfident. They show either a lack of enthusiasm or an excess of it. They either talk too little or never stop talking. They are either over-polite or rudely abrupt.
69. We can infer from the passage that an employer might tolerate his secretary’s occasional mistakes, if the latter is _____.
