Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage.

Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.

There is no doubt that running brings with it a feeling of pleasure. What we need to remember is that running can also make us be easily attacked. It can take us to unfamiliar places and we need to take care to stay safe on each and every run.

My first safety rule for day or night running is to always run against the flow of traffic. If possible, you should also avoid busy road and those with no sidewalks.

Wear light-colored or bright clothing or add a reflective jacket so traffic can see you more easily. Additionally, I like to wear a hat to protect my eyes from headlights(机动车前灯).

Do your best to run in safe, well-lit, low-traffic areas, preferably on the sidewalk and without a walkman. While it is easy to get into the daydreaming mode while running, especially if you are alone, stay aware of your surroundings. For this reason, it is not advisable to bring your walkman.

If possible, always run with at least one other person. If you are running by yourself, let someone know your route. You should pick a route that is not secluded(隐蔽的), or you will not be close to help. Vary your daily routine as much as possible, because the bad guys out there look for habits and routine and an easy target.

You should also always carry some form of identification with you. Of course you don’t want to think that anything bad will ever happen while you are out running, but the chance is always there no matter what you’re doing.

In a word, the bottom line is that to be safe you need all of your senses.

Section B (10 marks)

Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage.

    How is a landfill operated?

A landfill(垃圾填筑池), such as the North Wake Country Landfill, must be open and available every day. Customers are typically municipalities(市政当局) and construction companies, although residents(居民) may also use the landfill.

Near the entrance of the landfill is a recycling center where residents can drop off recyclable materials(aluminum[铝] cans, glass bottles, newspapers and paper products). This helps to reduce the amount of material in the landfill. Some of these materials are banned from landfill by law because they can be recycled.

As customers enter the site, their trucks are weighed at the scale house. Customers are charged tipping fees for using the site. The tipping fees vary from $10 to $40 per ton. These fees are used to pay for operation costs. The North Wake Country Landfill ha s an operation budget(预算) of approximately $4.5million, and part of that comes from tipping fees.

Along the site, there are drop-off stations for materials that are not wanted or legally banned by the landfill. A multi-material drop-off station is used for tires, motor oil, and lead-acid batteries. Some of these materials can be recycled. In addition, there is a house hold dangerous waste drop-off station for chemicals(paints, pesticides[杀虫剂], other chemicals) that are banned from landfill. These chemicals are dealt with by private companies. Some paints can be recycled and some organic chemicals can be burned in furnaces or power plants.

Other structures alongside the landfill are the borrowed area that supplies the soil for the landfill, the runoff(废物) collection pond and methane(甲烷) station.

School phobia is a type of illness which causes students to be afraid to go to school. This condition is most commonly seen in children, typically between the ages of 8-13. Symptoms include stomach aches, tiredness, shaking, a racing heart and frequent trips to the toilet.

This common phobia is associated with a wide variety of causes. A child who has recently moved, suffered a loss, or gone through a divorce may develop school phobia, and phobia can also develop in response to bullying(欺侮), an unrecognized learning disability, and poor self-image. Understanding the cause of a school phobia is an important step in providing treatment.

A child with school phobia usually refuses to go to school, or protects violently. He or she may become physically ill when ordered to school, or pretend to be sick to avoid going. When the child arrives at school, he or she may run away, or develop behavioral problems in class and on the playground. When school is discussed, the child can become impatient, upset or angry.

Many techniques can be used to manage school phobia, but research suggests that much more effective treatment is required for school phobia to prevent problems developing in later life. Children with this condition usually benefit from seeing a psychologist or doctor who can help the child and provide assistance to help parents and school officials support the child. As soon as a school phobia is identified, parents should take actions, too. Like other phobias, school phobia gets worse the longer it is left untreated, and it can interfere with a child’s success in school. Adjustments can be made at home and in the classroom to help.

Changes at home can include supportive language from parents, along with support like assistance with homework. If a child lacks confidence, parents may encourage the child to take up new hobbies that will help them to feel good about themselves. Parents might also talk to their children about their own fears of school and how they got over them, and their own enjoyment of school and school-like activities.

By following these methods we can help children to dispel their school phobia.
