5 A punctual(准时的) person is in the habit of doing a thing at the proper time and is never late in keeping an appointment.

71 He is always in a hurry and in the end loses both time and his good name. A lost thing may be found again, but lost time can never be regained. Time is more valuable than material things. 72 The unpunctual man is for ever wasting and mismanaging his most valuable assets as well as the assets of others’. The unpunctual person is always complaining that he finds no time to answers letters or return calls or keep appointments promptly(迅速的). 73 He knows that he can not get through his huge amount of work unless he faithfully attends to every piece of work when it has to be attended to.

Failure to be punctual in keeping one’s appointments is a sign of disrespect towards others. If a person is invited to dinner and arrives later than the appointed time, he keeps all the other guests waiting for him. 74

Unpunctuality, moreover, is very harmful when it comes to doing one’s duty, whether public or private. Imagine how it would be if those who are put in charge of important tasks failed to be at their proper place at the appointed time. 75

A. But the man who really has a great deal to do is very careful with his time and seldom complains because he lacks it.

B. How does an unpunctual man usually make use of his time?

C. In fact, time is life itself.

D. A man who is known to be habitually unpunctual is never trusted by his friends or fellow men.

E. The unpunctual man, on one hand, never does what he has to do at the proper time.

The size and shape of your ears show your character much than any other part of the face. Reading people’s character from their ears are an old science. Life in 2060

Let us suppose it is now about A.D. 2060. Let’s make believe(假设;虚构) it is about sixty years from now. Of course, things have changed and life is very different.

Voyages to the moon are being made every day. It is as easy to take a holiday on the moon today as it was for the people in 1960 to take a holiday in Europe. At a number of scenic spots on the moon, many hotels have been built. The hotels are air-conditioned, naturally. In order that everyone can enjoy the beautiful scenery on the moon, every room has at least one picture window. Everything imaginable is provided for entertainment(娱乐) of young and old.

What are people eating now? People are still eating food. They haven’t yet started to take on heir(继承) supply of energy directly as electrical current or as nuclear power. They may some day. Farming, of course, is very highly developed. Very few people have to work on the farm. It is possible to run the farm by just pushing a few buttons now and then.

People are now largely vegetarians(素食者). You see, as the number of people increases, the number of animals decreases. Therefore, the people have to be vegetarians and we are healthier both in our bodies and in our minds, and we know the causes and cure of disease and pain, and it is possible to get rid of diseases. We have some bad news about tigers. Three years ago, between 20 and 50 Bengal tigers lived in the Suklaphanta Wildlife Reserve in Nepal. But this year, researchers reported evidence of only 6 to 14 tigers. The Nepalese government announced the decrease of the tiger population last month. The wildlife reserve measures about 30,000 hectares (公顷). It is the world’s third largest living area for the big cats. The situation has become very serious. The officials said illegal hunting is the major cause of tigers’ disappearing from this protected area.

The World Wildlife Fund did most of the study about the tigers. The findings were based on pictures taken by camera traps from January to April. Researchers used two cameras to take pictures of the tigers from both sides. But the cameras also photographed the hunters who killed the tigers and removed their remains.

The Suklaphanta Wildlife Reserve is on the border with India. World Wildlife Fund officials say this makes it easy to illegally transport protected Wildlife. Very few of the tigers’ remains are found because all of the animals’ parts are valuable in the illegal wildlife trade. Mr. Miceler says the loss of tigers is linked to a powerful international criminal group that controls the illegal wildlife trade. Only about 2,000 to 4,000 Bengal tigers survive in the wild.

Most of them live in forests in central and south India, Bhutan, and the Himalayan foothills of India and Nepal. Bengal tigers also live in China, Bangladesh and Burma. It was Thanksgiving morning and in the crowded kitchen of my small home I was busy preparing the traditional Thanksgiving turkey when the doorbell rang. I opened the front door and saw two small children in rags huddling together inside the storm door on the top step.

“Any old papers, lady?” asked one of them.

I was busy. I wanted to say “ no” until I looked down at their feet. They were wearing thin little sandals, wet with heavy snow.

“ Come in and I’ll make you a cup of hot cocoa.”

They walked over and sat down at the table. Their wet sandals left marks upon the floor. I served them cocoa and bread with jam to fight against the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started again on my household budget.

The silence in the front room struck me. I looked in. The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked in a flat voice, “Lady, are you rich?”

I looked at my shabby slipcovers. The girl put her cup back in its saucer carefully and said, “Your cups match your saucers.” Her voice was hungry with a need that no amount of food could supply. They left after that, holding their bundles of papers against the wind. They hadn’t said “Thank you”. They didn’t need to. They had reminded me that I had so much for which to be grateful. Plain blue china cups and saucers were only worth five pence. But they matched.

I tasted the potatoes and stirred the meat soup. Potatoes and brown meat soup, a roof over our heads, my man with a good steady job―these matched, too.

I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room. The muddy prints of small sandals were still wet upon my floor. Let them be for a while, I thought, just in case I should begin to forget how rich I am.

B. She had old papers to sell.

A. she saw that the lady’s room was comfortable

B. she saw the cups matched the saucers

C. the writer’s slipcovers were very new

D. the writer was preparing a big meal while she was too hungry
