BEIJING changed the office hours of many institutions starting April 12 in the hope of reducing traffic jams during rush hour. The new policy asked 800,000 employees to replace their former working schedule of 8:30 am to 5:30 pm with the new working hours of 9 am to 6 pm. This is just one part of the Beijing municipal government’s plan to fight traffic jams. Starting April 1, daytime parking fees in 13 downtown areas were raised to encourage less driving. On April 2, the government announced limitations launched after the Beijing Olympics would be extended until April 2012. These ban Beijing’s 5.8 million drivers from driving one workday each week. The ban is based on the last number of the car license plate. A multi-billion yuan fund has also been set up to build more underground ring roads in heavily populated areas. Major roads above ground will also be expanded. According to Beijing’s traffic authorities, key projects include repairing major ring roads and expanding the subway network. The city will also create more taxi stops and bike rental stations, probably under the hundreds of overpasses (天桥) citywide. Beijing’s fight against traffic jams is a smaller example of what is happening all around China. The central government is now supporting new ideas that will change the future of Chinese roads.

Bus rapid transit (BRT,快速公交系统) is one such idea. Special bus lanes carry almost as many passengers as a subway system. They cost less and are becoming popular in many big cities. Now Beijing has five BRT lines Shanghai is dealing with traffic problems by charging higher fees for license plates. The city is also controlling the total number of plates sold. Now, it is considering a plan to charge cars for entering the central business district, as London does. Meanwhile, there are signs that Chinese are more aware of the serious problem of traffic. For example, there has been a sharp increase in the number of posts looking for carpooling (拼车) partners on major websites. By the end of March, 2010, China had 192 million cars, according to the Ministry of Public Security.

Christmas in Australia is often very hot. Whereas the northern hemisphere is in the middle of winter, Australians are baking in summer heat. It is not unusual to have Christmas Day well into the mid 30 degrees Celsius, or near 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

A traditional meal includes a turkey dinner, with ham, and pork. A flaming Christmas plum pudding is added for dessert. A serous problem for today’s society is who should be responsible for our elderly and how to improve their lives. It is not only a financial problem but also a question of the system we want for our society. I would like to suggest several possible solutions to this problem.

First, employers should take the responsibility for their retired employees. To make this possible, a percentage of profits should be set aside for this purpose. But when a company must take life-long responsibility for its employees, it may suffer from a commercial disadvantage due to higher employee costs.

Another way of solving the problem is to return the responsibility to the individual. This means each person must save during his working years to pay for his years of retirement. This does not seem a very fair model since some people have enough trouble paying for their daily life without trying to earn extra to cover their retirement years. This means the government might have to step in to care for the poor.

In addition, the government could take responsibility for the care of the elderly. This could be financed through government taxes to increase the level of pensions. Furthermore, some institution should be created for senior citizens, which can help provide a comfortable life for them. Unfortunately, as the present situation in our country shows, this is not a truly viable answer. The government can seldom afford to care for the elderly, particularly when it is busy trying to care for the young.

One further solution is that the government or social organizations establish some working places especially for the elderly where they are independent.

To sum up, all these options have advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, it is reasonable to expect that some combination of these options may be needed to provide the care we hope to give to our elderly generations.

64.What is the passage mainly about?

A.The problem faced by the old in society.

B.Why we should take responsibility for the old.

C.How we can improve the lives of the old.

D.Where the old can go to get their pensions.

65.According to the passage, how can the government help to improve the lives of retired people?

A.Set aside some profits to help people with problems after they retire.

B.Increase savings levels of people during their working years.

C.Increase the discounts for food and transport for the old.

D.Make available pensions for those who have retired.

66.The underlined word “viable” most probably means .

    A.impossible B.practical C.useful D.successful

67.What can be concluded from the passage?

A.Taking care of the old is mainly an issue of money.

B.Employers should allow their workers to retire at a later age.

C.Becoming independent should be the goal of most old people.

D.There is no single solution to the problems of the old.

One of the big challenges that students face in applying to universities abroad is writing the application essay.

The essay topics all have something in common. They attempt to get at what type of person you are, what motivates you,and what you feel passion for. In a single 500-word piece of writing,

admissions officers(招生负责人)attempt to gather all about you. So your task is of your personality on the essay and make yourself special.

You can try and guess what the admissions officers like. But that won’t work. The essay will sound empty and become another dull piece of writing, which admissions officers get thousands of each year.

It is true that admissions officers aren’t exactly looking for anything. The answer is just as open-ended as the question itself. If they ask for someone who has inspired you, it could be anyone. It could be a grandmother, a teacher, or even a character from a movie. A lot of people will say their dad. But since you really feel it, you’ll have a lot to write about.

There are some important things to remember. These admissions officers want good writers. You don't have to be Ernest Hemingway, but you have to be able to form an interesting story. That means revision(校对)and editing, cutting out stupid grammar mistakes, reading it over several times, leaving it for a few days and looking at it again. Whatever you do, make sure the essay is as good as possible.

Also, you should use exciting language and really make the reader feel the same passion as you do. It also means finding something unique about your point of view, something that other people might not think of.For example,if you want to write about your dad, you can focus on a specific anecdote(趣闻)about him .Admissions officers love personal stories that ring true.

60. The purpose of the passage is to give advice on how to_________.

A. choose an essay topic B. read the officers’minds

C. be a good writer D. write an effective application

61. The underlined part of paragraph 2 suggests that you__________.

A.stick enough stamps before posting your application essay

B.write something unique in an essay to impress the readers

C.take the task of showing off yourself seriously

D.pay attention to your personal essay

62. When admissions officers ask who has inspired you, they mean to________.

A.know about your family members B. understand you better

C.find out what your father does D.discover your personal affairs

63. According to the writer, it is wise to produce an essay with__________.

A.500 beautiful words B.many funny things

 C.truthful specific stories D.indirect answers
