For a small town, Manhattan, Kansas has some big surprise. And one of them is the Holiday Inn Hotel, with rooms built around a swimming pool and a friendly family atmosphere(氛围,气氛).
The Holiday Inn is where Manhattan people often go for a special party, or a night out. A lot of them choose to eat in the brightly lighted(灯光明亮的) restaurant near the pool. And many of them will be served by Ellen Logan, who has worked as a waitress here for more than two years.
Ellen, like most of the waitresses, is also a student. She comes from Nebraska, but she’s planning one day to be a veterinary surgeon, and to care for small animals. But in order to support herself at college, she works twenty hours a week at the Holiday Inn.
Ellen soon learned what every waitress finds out. Your best friend is a good pair of shoes. She paid fifty-five dollars for hers, much more than she would usually spend. She’s discovered something else too. You don’t have to know much about food to be a good waitress, but you do have to know a lot about people.
“A lot of business people always stay here when they come to Manhattan”, she explains. “They like you to recognize them and remember their favorite dishes. But some couples(夫妇)come for a night out together. They just want to be left alone. Then there are people who can’t make up their minds. They look down the menu(菜单) and say ‘What do you suggest?’ So I ask them how hungry they are. If they say ‘Not very’, ‘I suggest the salad bar, with soup, salad, bread and a fruit Kansas Strip Steak, with potatoes or rice. You get salad and bread as well, It’s very nice. Really good value.”
Ellen may get tired feet sometimes, but at least she’s learning too much about people. She’ll probably make a good animal doctor, but if she finds she doesn’t like it after all, she can always become a psychiatrist (精神病专家) instead.

Never go into a supermarket hungry! This is a good piece of advice. If you go shopping for food before lunchtime, you’ll probably buy more than you plan to. Unfortunately, however, just this advice isn’t enough for consumers(消费者) these days. Modern shoppers need an education in how and how not to buy things at the store. First, you check the weekly newspaper ads. Find out the items that are on sale and decide if you really need these things. In other words, don’t buy anything just because it’s cheaper than usual! “New and Improved!” or “All Natural” on the front of a package (包装盒)influence (影响)you. Instead, read the list of ingredients(成分) on the back. Third, compare prices: that is, you should examine the prices of both different brands(品牌) and different sizes of the same brand.
Another suggestion for consumers is to buy ordinary items instead of famous brands. Ordinary items in supermarkets come in plain(简单的、无装饰的) packages. These products are cheaper because producers don’t spend much money on packing (包装)or advertising. The quality, however, is usually as good as the quality of well-known name brands. In the same way, in buying clothes, you can often find high quality and low prices in brands that are not famous. Shopping in discount(打折的) clothing stores can help you save a lot of money. Although these stores aren’t very attractive, and they usually do not have individual(个人的) dressing rooms(更衣室), not only are the prices low, but you can often find the same famous brands that you find in high-priced department stores.
Wise consumers read magazine ads and watch TV commercials(商业), but they do this with one advantage: knowledge of the psychology(心理学) behind the ads. In other words, well-informed(博闻的) consumers watch for information and check for misinformation. They ask themselves questions: Is the advertiser hiding something in small print at the bottom of the page? Is there any real information in the commercial, or is the advertiser simply showing an attractive image(表象,形象)? With the answers to these questions, consumers can make a wise choice.

Do you feel unsettled(紧张不安) and uncertain before a test? Do you long to improve your methods of learning? Many students complain that their serious problem is a lack of concentration. It severely affects their ability to study, so do their test results.
If so, use these tips(秘诀) to help you.
Study Techniques(学习技巧)
You should always study in the same place. You shouldn’t sit in a position that you use for another purpose. For example, when you sit on a sofa to study, your brain will think it is time to relax. Don’t watch TV while you are studying. Experts warn that your concentration may be reduced by 50 percent if you attempt to study in this way. Always try to have a white wall in front of you, so there is nothing to distract (make less concentrated) you. Before sitting down to study, gather together all the equipment you need. Apart from your textbooks, pens, pencils and knives, make sure you have a dictionary. If your study desk or table is needed when you are not studying, store all your equipment in a box beside it.
Your eyes will become tired if you try to read a text which is on a flat surface. Place your book at an angle of 30 degrees.
Be realistic and don’t try to complete too much in one study period. Finish one thing before beginning another. If you need a break, get up and walk around for a few minutes, but try not to telephone a friend or have something to eat.
Test-taking Skills(应试技巧)
All your hard work will be for nothing if you are too nervous to take your test. Getting plenty of rest is very important. This means : do not study all night before your test! It is a better idea to have a long-term study plan. Try to make a timetable for your study which lasts for a few months.
Exercise is a great way to reduce pressure. Doing some form of exercise every day will also improve your concentration. Eat healthy food too.
When you arrive in the examination room, find your seat and sit down. Breathe slowly and deeply. Check the time on the clock during the test, but not too often. Above all, take no notice of everyone else and fix your mind on the test paper.
