10. It was September 2nd, 1666, Sunday morning in London. Pepys and his wife were asleep, but their servants were busy preparing for the dinner. The family planned to ask some friends to come to their home at noon. At three o'clock, one servant saw the bright colour of a fire in the sky, it became so bright that he called Pepys to look at it. Pepys put on his clothes and went to the window to watch. It seemed far away, so he went back to bed again. At daybreak, the servant came again and said that the fire burned down 300 houses in the night and it was still burning. Pepys went to tell the King quickly. The King sent him to put out the fire near London Bridge. When he got there, most of the houses had been burned down. He learned that the fire started in a baker's shop. The baker's house caught fire from a hot oven. The houses were dry because of a long hot summer. The fire moved quickly to other houses. Thus began the Great Fire of London. It went on for almost five days. It burned down 13, 000 houses. Most of the old city was gone forever.
