Fewer Americans are reading newspapers and more Americans are instead getting their news online, but television remains the leading source of news in the country, according to a survey.
Not surprisingly, younger people tend to get more of their news on the Internet, while older people use traditional media such as television and newspapers, the Pew Research Center’s survey on the ways of getting news said the results show an increasing change toward getting news online, but that there is now a fairly large group of better-off people that use both traditional and online sources to get their news. The Pew researchers referred to these people as integrators, and said they accounted for 23 percent of those surveyed, spending the most time getting news on a typical day. “Like Net news consumers, integrators are highly educated. However, they are older,” the survey said.
It is this group that advertisers typically like to target, which helps explain why newspaper publishers have seen sharp falls in ad income as spending shifts to online. Pew found that the largest group of news consumers -46percent of those surveyed-have a heavy reliance(依赖) on television for their news at all times of the day. This group is the oldest, with a median age of 52, with 43 percent unemployed. They are unlikely to own a computer or go online for news.
“The group that relies most on the Internet for news is the youngest at a median age of 35. It is also the smallest group, at 13 percent of those surveyed. Fewer than half of them watch television news on a regular basis.”

A Mumbai based but British made movie, Slumdog Millionaire took the most of Oscars in Hollywood last week. Starring a cast of unknown actors, the movie won eight awards including best picture and best director.
The movie follows the life of an 18-year-old boy who’s grown up in the slums of Mumbai, India. The boy ends up winning money and love when he makes it onto a popular TV game show.
In spite of the film’s success at the Academy Awards, Indians have mixed feelings about Slumdog. The argument about how the movie portrays(描述) India began when it hit cinemas.
The film is set in the poor and cruel society of one of Mumbai’s slums. In one scene, the hero jumps into a smelly open-air toilet to run after a pop star. That world, though real to hundreds so millions of Indians, is very different to how modern India see itself. Many Indian audiences feel uncomfortable with the film’s portraying of India as a slum land.
Several well-respected local Indian filmmakers have said the story has been tailored for western audiences. Veteran Bollywood star, Amitabh Bachchan, said the film portrayed India as a “Third World, dirty developing nation”.
Even some of those who like the movie are unhappy with its title. People who live in slums have taken to the streets with signs that read: “Don’t call us dogs” and “I’m not a slum dog”.
“It’s understandable why people are unhappy with the title,” Indian author Chitra Divakaruni told the New York Times. “In Indian culture being called a dog is extremely rude. It is often used in films to describe evil people.”
However, others have been more positive. The Wall Street Journal in New York described Slumdog as “the world’s first globalized masterpiece”.
