When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard.

Questions11 through 13 are based on the following passage.

If you wish to become a better reader, here are four important points to remember about rate or speed of reading:

· Knowing why you are reading--- what you are reading---will often help you to know whether to read rapidly or slowly.

· Some things should be read slowly throughout such as directions for making or doing something, arithmetic problems, and science and history books. These books are full of important information. You must read such things slowly to remember each important step and understand each important idea.

· Some things should be read rapidly throughout such as stories meant for enjoyment, letters from friends, news items from the local newspaper, telling what is happening to friends and neighbors

· In some of your readings, you must change your speed from fast to slow and slow to fast, as you go along. You need to read certain pages rapidly and then slow down and do more careful readings when you come to important ideas which must be remembered.

11. According to this passage, what does your reading speed depend on?(C)

12. What should one take up if he wants to be relaxed by reading?(A)

13. Which of the readings should you read slowly and carefully?(C)

Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following introduction.

Hello, I’m Judy Henderson. Before we start our first lab, I’d like to tell you a little bit about the workbook we will be using. The first thing I’d like to point out is that the workbook contains a very large amount of material, for more than you could ever handle in a single semester. What you suppose to do is to choose experiments and activities that you want to do , within a certain framework of course. Part of my job is to help you make your choices. Next, I’d like to mention that in each workbook chapter, there are usually two sub-sections. The first is called experiment, and the second is called activities. In the experiment section the workbook gives full instructions for all the experiments including alternate procedures. You may use the procedure you wish on the basis of available equipment or personal preference. In the activity section, you will find suggestions for many experiments, exercise and projects that you can do at your own time. You’ll see that there are usually no detailed instructions for the activities. You are supposed to do them in your own way. OK, let’s turn to chapter one now.

14. What is the instructor describing? (C)

15. How are the activities different from the experiment? (D)

16. When could this talk be given? (A)

Section C

Directions: In Section C, you will hear two longer conversations. The conversations will be read twice. After you hear each conversation, you are required to fill in the numbered blanks with the information you have heard. Write your answers on your answer sheet.

Blanks 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation.

M: Hi, Kate. What are you up to?

W: Not much, Greg. How are things with you?

M: Pretty decent. I wanted to know if you could do me a favor.

W: What do you need?

M: I finished my exams and I have to catch a flight early tomorrow morning. I was wondering if you could give me a ride to the airport.

W: No problem. I’ll be driving right by there. What time do you need to be there? M: My flight leaves at 7:00 a.m. and I should get there 30 minutes before it leaves.

W: I guess we should leave at about 6:00 then.

M: Thanks, Kate. I really appreciate it.

W: I’ll see you tomorrow morning at 6:00 in front of the dormitory.

Blanks 21 through 24 are based on the following conversation.

W: Hi, Larry! Are you waiting to see Professor Jamison?

M: Yea. Since I got one of the five highest grades in her economics class, she asked me if I’d be interested in working as her assistant next term and I am here now for my interview.

W: Oh, yes. I know all about the job. I did it two years ago.

M: Really? Did you like it?

W: I think it was the best job I’ve had at school. It paid 15 dollars an hour which was two dollars an hour more than I got working at the school post office the year before.

M: Wow! That’s a good salary.

W: You also learn how to use computer database. And building up your computer skills is a good preparation for lots of jobs.

M: The job sounds great. But I’m a little worried about how much time it might take.

W: It’s pretty reasonable. It never took me more than five hours a week to do the job.

M: That sounds manageable.

W: Good luck with your interview.
