Which of the following could be the best title of the passage? A. The taste of a good book B. The best way to make kids learn C. Eating means more than reading D. Our roasted potatoes and eggs B About 18,000 refugees from Burma have come to the United States each year since 2007. Some have settled in Howard County, Maryland between Baltimore and Washington. A local school began teaching English to the children of the refugees. But while the children learned the language, their parents did not. That made communication with teachers arduous. At present, almost fifty children from Burma attend Bollman Bridge Elementary School. Laurel Conran is a teacher there. She said, “The main idea is the global idea. She teaches English to speakers of other languages. One of her students is Tha Neih Ciang. Another student is Tha Neih’s mother, Tin Iang. Ms. Conran practices English with Tin Iang at the mother’s workplace. Many refugees from Burma work at Coastal Sunbelt Produce, a supplier of fruits and vegetables to restaurants and other businesses. Laurel Conran started classes at the company to help refugees from Burma learn English. Laurel Conran said, “The program is a six-week session. It’s once a week, on every Wednesday, from twelve to one o’clock. So every Wednesday I go to Coastal Sunbelt. As the workers eat lunch, they also practice their new language skills. Lisa Chertok has a child at Bollman Bridge. She is also a manager at Coastal Sunbelt. She helped Ms. Conran develop the lessons, which she says have really helped. Lisa Chertok said, “Well, when the Burmese employees got here, they were very, very shy. Now I find that they are more outspoken than before. They’re more communicative. As parents, they are also more involved in their children’s school. Jonathan Davis is the principal of Bollman Bridge Elementary School. Mr. Davis hopes the lessons will help these parents feel better about communicating with the school. He said, “Even as simple as making a phone call to say that their son or daughter is sick, even if that’s the amount of English that they have got from the program, that truly will help us. 查看更多

Even a small reduction in salt in the diet can be a big help to the heart. A new study used a computer model to predict how just three grams less a day would affect heart disease in the United States.
The result: thirteen percent fewer heart attacks. Eight percent fewer strokes. Four percent fewer deaths. Eleven percent fewer new cases of heart disease. And two hundred forty billion dollars in health care savings.
Researchers found it could prevent one hundred thousand heart attacks and ninety-two thousand deaths every year.
The study is in the New England Journal of Medicine. Kirsten, at the University of California, was the lead author. She says people would not even notice a difference in taste with three grams, or one-half teaspoon, less salt per day. The team also included researchers at Stanford and Columbia University.
Each gram of salt contains four hundred milligrams of sodium, which is how foods may list their salt content.
The government says the average American man eats ten grams of salt a day. The American Heart Association advises no more than three grams for healthy people. It says salt in the American diet has increased fifty percent since the nineteen seventies, while blood pressures have also risen. Less salt can mean a lower blood pressure.
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is leading an effort called the National Salt Reduction Initiative. The idea is to put pressure on food companies and restaurants.
Mayor Bloomberg has already succeeded in other areas, like requiring fast food places in the city to list calorie information. Now a study by the Seattle Children's Research Institute shows how that idea can influence what parents order for their children.
Ninety-nine parents of three to six year olds took part. Half had McDonald's menus clearly showing how many calories were in each food. The other half got menus without the calorie information.

A woman in the US is able to speak for the first time in 11 years after a pioneering voice box transplant(移植).

Brenda Jensen said the operation was a great success which had saved her life.Thirteen days after the surgery she said her first words:"Good morning, I want to go home."It is the first time a voice box and windpipe have been transplanted at the same time and only the second time a voice box has ever been transplanted.

Ms.Jensen, 52, had been unable to speak on her own since her voice box was damaged during surgery in 1999.Since then, she has been unable to taste or smell food, could breathe only through a hole in her windpipe and could talk only with the help of an electronic voice box.

In October, surgeons at the University of California Davis Medical Centre removed the voice box and 6cm of the windpipe from a donor body.In an 18-hour operation, this was transplanted into Ms.Jensen's throat and the team connected it to her blood supply and nerves(神经).

Professor Martin Birchall from University College London, who was part of the surgery team, said:"We've learned that we can repair nerves to make even very complex organs function again. It'll open the door to better facial transplants and will be extremely important as tissue engineering develops."

A voice box transplant might be life changing, but it is not life saving.Everyone who receives a transplant must take drugs to control the immune system(免疫系统)for the rest of their lives. These drugs can reduce life expectancy, so they are normally set aside for life saving procedures.

One of the reasons Ms.Jensen was a suitable person for this transplant was that she was already taking immune controlling drugs after a kidney-pancreas transplant four years ago.Professor Peter Belafsky, part of the surgical team, said:" Brenda was an exceptional candidate for the transplant because she was highly motivated.Anyone who's met Brenda knows that she is a strong and determined person with a great outlook on life in spite of the many physical challenges she's faced over her lifetime.

One thing Britain is famous for is pubs, and no trip to the UK would be complete without a visit to one of
the thousands of pubs across the country.
Pubs play an important part in the social structure of the country. They are places where all ages and social
classes mix to talk, do business, or just spend a couple of quiet hours before heading home in the evening.

There are many different types of beer available in pubs. Traditional British beer is called bitter, or ale, and
is usually served at room temperature. As a result, the British are famous for their "warm beer"!
If you prefer a cold beer, ask for lager. This beer is a light yellow in colour whereas bitter is usually a darker
brown. Another type of beer is stout-you may have heard of Guinness, which is a type of stout. This is a cold,
black beer and takes a long time to pour, so don't be surprised if you have to wait for it.
All beers are served as pints (500 ml) or halves (250 ml). To order, you need to ask for a pint or half, and
then name the beer. So, you could say "_____".
Another drink is cider. This is like beer, but it is made from apples so it can taste sweet. Wine, red or white,
is normally available in all pubs, as are spirits such as whisky, gin or vodka. These are served as singles (25ml) o
r doubles (50 ml).
It is not, however, necessary to drink alcohol. Non-alcoholic drinks are called soft drinks. You can have
juice, lemonade or cola, among others.
If you visit a pub in a group, it is important to pay for your "round". This means that you buy a drink for
everyone in your group. Not buying your round is a big social mistake. Remember that you need to order and
pay for your drinks at the bar.
So, follow these tips if you want to get the most out of visiting a pub, and, "cheers!"
