Hi Eric,
We don’t have smog in Oxford. We get fog sometimes, but that’s all. Oxford is much smaller than LA. We only have about 135,000 people. I looked up the 1900 population, it was about 57,000. So it is about twice as many people, not ten times as many, like LA! Oxford is much smaller than London - London has about 7,000,000 people. So that means that LA has more people than London. LA gets hotter than Oxford. We have colder winters too – it can be -4°C in winter.
I’m not surprised that your new student only knew about the university. It is famous because it is one of the oldest universities in the country. There are about 18,000 students. The brother of my best friend is at Aberystwyth University, in Wales. There the population is 14,000 and half of that are students! It must be a strange place to live! There are more tourists in Oxford than students, I should think. We get a lot of tourists, all year round. We also get a lot of young foreign students because there are a lot of language schools here. You can stand in the middle of Oxford, close your eyes, and hear accents from all over the world!
  Your e-mail friend, Ben

It is said that as the population of a city grows, so do its problems. Pollution, too many cars, and crowded
streets are just a few of these difficulties. One way to help with these problems is city trains. Trains traveling
to different parts of a city mean fewer cars and buses on our roads, cleaner air, and more open streets. In
recent years, cities such as Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Shanghai have all built city train lines.
The first city train line in China was built in Beijing. The oldest part of the train line, from Beijing Zhan to
Ping Guo Yuan was opened in 1969. Its length was 23.6 kilometres. As the city grew after 1980, so did the
need for more trains. A newer train line was built to help move people around the city centre. The 16-kilometre-
long "circle (环形) line" was finished in 1987. Since that time even more train stations have been built and today
the train lines in the city are over 50 kilometres long.
For the 2008 Olympic Games, the trains of Beijing will be very important. It is thought that most of the
people who go to watch the different sports during the Games will travel using trains.
