Reading comprehension(阅读理解)
People often say, “Children can't do maths problems. It's because parents can't do their children's homework.” Here's an example to show what I mean.
The other day my daughter brought home her maths homework. “I have to subtract(减) 179 from 202,” she said.
“It's quite easy,” I said, “You put the 202 over the 179.”
“But we need a 10 here. Where is the 10?”
“I don't know where the 10 is. Let's just subtract 179 from 202. Nine from two is three. You carry one and add(加) it to seven. Eight from zero is two. The answer is 23.”
“We can't do it that way. We have to use the 10.”
“Well, I'm going to call your teacher to see how she subtracts 179 from 202.”
Over the telephone, I said that I was having a bit of trouble with the homework she had given to my daughter. The teacher said, “In the right-hand column(栏) we have units of one. The two in that column counts for two ones. The zero in the center counts for zero tens. Then two in the left-hand column counts for hundreds. Are you clear?” But I didn't think it was clear.
I hung up and found my way to the medicine box. My head was now hurting. I started putting pills of medicine into my mouth. “How many did you take?” my wife asked. “I took one and then I took another… I knew one and one was two, but don't ask me what it is now.”

Why do we come to school? Most of us may say we come to school to study. But to study needs a right way, or you either waste the time or the money. The following are the ways for studying.
The best time for reading is morning. In the morning the air is fresh and the mind is clear. For that reason we can get good results.
In studying we must have patience(耐心). If we have not known a text well, we must read it again. We should not read the next one until we have learned the first one well.
When we are studying, we must put our hearts into the books, or we can get nothing from the books while we are reading.
We must always ask “whys”. If it is not well understood, write it down and ask our teachers or our parents, brothers or friends. In any possible way, we must know it completely and what we have learned can be used well and made better.
Though there are many ways for studying, yet what I have said above will be enough if we can keep them in heart and do so.

When I was growing up in America, I was ashamed of my mother’s Chinese English. Because of her English, she was often treated unfairly. People in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her.
My mother has realized the disadvantages of her English as well. When I was fifteen, she used to have me call people on phone to pretend I was she. I was forced to ask for information or even to yell at people who had been rude to her. One time I had to call her stockbroker. I said in a voice that was not very convincing, “This is Mrs. Tan.” And my mother was standing beside me, whispering loudly, “Why he doesn’t send me the cheek. It’s already two weeks late.”
And then, in perfect English I said: “I’m getting rather anxious .You agreed to send the check two weeks ago, but it hasn’t arrived.” Then she talked more loudly. “What does he want? I’ll come to New York and say it in front of his boss.” And so I turned to the stockbroker again, “I can’t accept any more excuses. If I don’t receive the check immediately, I have to speak to your manager when I am in New York next week.”
The next week we ended up in New York. While I was sitting there red-faced, my mother, the real Mrs. Tan, was shouting to his boss in her broken English. When I was a teenager, my mother’s broken English embarrassed me. But now, I see it differently. To me, my mother’s English is perfectly clear, perfectly natural. It is my mother tongue. Her language, as I hear it, is clear and direct. It was the language that helped me form the way I saw things, expressed ideas, and made sense of the world.
