A Hard-working Student

This story is about a young student. She worked very hard at her lessons. She was too busy to have a rest. At last, she became ill, and couldn’t go to sleep. Every night, when she went to bed, she closed her eyes and tried to sleep. But the more she tried, the more she stayed awake.

After a while she went to see a doctor, “I just can’t go to sleep at night. What should I do?” “I have a suggestion (建议),” said the doctor, “Try counting numbers. By the time you reach one thousand, you will be asleep. I’m sure of it.”

The next day the student returned to the doctor’s office. “Well,” said the doctor, “How are you today? But when I reached five hundred and sixty-nine, I began to feel sleepy. I had to get up and drink some coffee so that (以便) I could go on counting up to one thousand. Once I thought love meant flowers, gifts and sweet kisses. So, I really doubted whether there was any love between my parents. Every day they were working hard to pay for my high school. They didn’t act in the romantic ways that I read in books and saw on TV, and they certainly didn’t send flowers to each other on Valentine’s Day (情人节).

    One day, my mother was sewing a quilt (被子). I asked her if there was any love between her and my dad. She stopped and raised her head in surprise.
