Chinese culture researchers will use modern computer and video technologies to set up a national audio and video database for Chinese traditional operas. The database was made by the Chinese Academy of Arts, together with provincial-level art research institutes across the country. They hope to protect the nation’s traditional operas, according to Wang Wenzhang, president of the academy.

The influence of foreign cultures in China has caused great challenges for the survival(生存)of Chinese traditional operas. There were 367 types of traditional operas in China at the end of 1950’s, but the number has dropped to 267 in 2004.

“If we do not take practical measures to protect the traditional operas that are still alive, some of them will disappear very soon,” said Liu Wenfeng, deputy(副职)director of the research institute of traditional Chinese operas at the academy.Liu, who was in charge of the project, said the academy was planning to spend one and a half years in setting up the database.

The academy has so far collected more than 40 000 records of traditional operas, 15 000 hours of audio recordings and 2000 hours of video recordings of Chinese traditional operas.Such a collection will be very helpful for setting up the database, according to Liu.“However, what the academy possesses includes only those materials related to major traditional operas, such as Peking Opera and Kunqu, ” said Liu, adding that the traditional operas popular among small groups of people were not included.“That is why we are asking the provincial-level art research institutes to take part in the project so that more local operas could be found and included in the database, ” said Liu.

“Thanks to modern computer technology, these materials will be finally turned into digital products and put on the Internet, ” he said.“Once the database is completed, all of the materials will be provided for Internet users at home and abroad.Such a practice will be very effective in promoting(促进)exchanges between Chinese and overseas researchers,” Liu added.

It is normal for parents to question their children's hairstyle or the clothes they wear. But today teenagers and their parents argue over something else:money.

Children are spending lots of it.Parents used to say to their children,“You're wearing that?”Now they say,“You paid how much for that?”

Children in the US today spend five times more money than their parents did when they were young.

So what are all these children buying? The list is long:iPods, trainers, cell phones and jeans are typical items that children“have to”buy. And they will do anything to get them. They ask their parent's over and over until they buy them.

But parents also need to take the blame for spending so much money. They want their children to have the best stuff. They end up competing with other parents over what their children have.

So no wonder children find it hard to learn the importance of saving money rather than spending it all the time.

And it's hard to save when companies use advertising and clever slogans to encourage young people to buy their products. They even encourage children to keep asking their parents for something until they get it.

Today, you don't even need to have money in order to buy something.Banks give out credit cards and loans all the time so people are saving less and less.We are used to there being lots of money around. And if you don't have much you can always borrow some.

But this hasn't always been the case. When our grandparents were young there was very little money and everyone had to save hard for things they bought. They only bought things they needed, not things they just wanted.

The older generation made the wise expression,“Money doesn't grow on trees.”This is as true now as it was 50 years ago. They give money a great deal of value. And we all have a lot to learn from them.

A.

C.

people have more money than in the past and saving is out of date

How could we possibly think that keeping animals in cages in unnatural environments-mostly for entertainment purposes-is fair and respectful?

Zoo officials say they are concerned about animals. However, most zoos remain“collections”of interesting“things”rather than protective habitats.Zoos teach people that it is acceptable to keep animals bored, lonely, and far from their natural zones.Zoos claim to educate people and save endangered species, but visitors leave zoos without having learned anything meaningful about the animals’ natural behavior, intelligence, or beauty.Zoos keep animals in small spaces or cages, and most signs only mention the species’ name, diet, and natural range. The animals’ normal behavior is seldom noticed because zoos don’t usually take care of the animals’ natural needs.

The animals are kept together in small spaces, with no privacy and little opportunity for mental and physical exercise. This results in unusual and self-destructive behavior called zoochosis.A worldwide study of zoos found that zoochosis is common among animals kept in small spaces or cages.Another study showed that elephants spend 22 percent of their time making repeated head movements or biting cage bars, and bears spend 30 percent of their time walking back and forth, a sign of unhappiness and pain.

Furthermore, most animals in zoos are not endangered.Captive breeding(圈养繁殖)of endangered big cats, Asian elephants, and other species has not resulted in their being sent back to the wild.Zoos talk a lot about their captive breeding programs because they do not want people to worry about a species dying out.In fact, baby animals also attract a lot of paying customers.Haven’t we seen enough competitions to name baby animals?Actually, we will save endangered species only if we save their habitats and put an end to the reasons people kill them.Instead of supporting zoos, we should support groups that work to protect animals’ natural habitats.

A.

Section C

Directions: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from the list A-F for each paragraph.  There is one extra heading which you do not need.(本题请涂在答题卡上)

(E)

A.The disadvantage(s) of credit cards.

B.Clever choice of credit cards.

C.The benefits credits cards bring.

D.Avoidance of economic trouble by using credit cards wrongly.

E. People’s misunderstanding about credit cards.

F. Ways to save on the interest.

80.______ Although credit cards are already a more acceptable part of the financial dealings, they are still regarded, especially in the time of a serious economic crisis, by many as being a major part of the “live now pay later” system.  Along with hire-purchase regulations, credit cards, according to some, provide encouragement to spend more money.  However, it’s only the fool who is dominated by the temptation to live, temporarily at least, beyond their means, and such people would no doubt manage to do so even without credit cards.

81.______ Advertising campaigns have already promoted a growing realization of the advantages of these small pieces of plastic.  They avoid the need to carry large amounts of cash and are always useful in emergencies.  And the monthly credit card bill is a loyal booker keeping your monthly purchase record and indicating your buying habits.

82.______ All the credit card organizations charge interest on a monthly basis which may work out as high as two percent a year.  But sensible purchase using a card can mean that you obtain up to seven weeks interest-free credit.  Using the card abroad, where items frequently take a long time to be included on your account, can extend this period even further.

83.______ It is worthwhile consulting more credit card companies before deciding on a particular credit card.  It is necessary to consider the amount of credit granted, interest rates, which may vary slightly; the number and range of outlets, though most cards cover major stores.

84.______ Undoubtedly, if used wisely, a credit card can cost nothing, or at lease help to tide you over a period of financial difficulty.  However, we should also remember that the wrong use of the little plastic may drag us deep into financial troubles.  More than half of the American personal bankruptcy(破产) and credit failure cases are connected with the wrong use of the credit card.  Therefore, every time you open your wallet and reach for a credit card, remember to ask yourself:” Is the item necessary to me?” and “Do I really need so many credit cards?”
