(湖南省长沙市一中2010届高三第五次月考)

C

The security for the 2010 Winter Olympics will be carried out in a subtle and friendly way, and cost less than one billion Canadian dollars (800 million US dollars), the top officer for the job said Sunday.

The security budget for the games will not surpass 1 billion, but the exact figure will only be released after the federal and British Columbia provincial governments settled their agreement, Assistant Commissioner Bud Mercer of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) told Canadian Press.

The billion dollar ceiling was floated by former Public Safety minister Stockwell Day, who said late 2008 that the budget was at least double the original figure of 175 million, but less than 1 billion.

The Integrated Security Unit in charge of the Games is led by the RCMP, but also includes Vancouver municipal police departments, the military, border services officials and private security. At an exercise in November 2008, more than 500 people from 70 different agencies were involved in running scenarios for the Games. Two further exercises are planned this year, said Mercer.

Military camps are planned for the Sea-to-Sky highway linking Vancouver and Whistler, B.C. in order to patrol the backcountry and keep watch on the vital Games artery.

Secure zones will be established around all venues and handheld screening equipment will be used at entrances.

A network of surveillance cameras will also be in place, and the equipment that can scan for biological or nuclear threats will also reportedly be used.

As to reports that terrorists are a threat and may go as for as infiltration contractors to gain access to security planning, Mercer said,” Our threat at present is low.”

“ I know where the security plans are, the security plans are secure, they’re safe, they’re locked up and they’re not in any danger of being leaked or be in the hands of anybody we wouldn’t want them to be in.” Mercer said his goal is not only to ensure safety, but also best service. “ I’ll be personally disappointed if anybody left here and all they remembered was security,” he said,” So our goal is to do it the Canadian way. Security will be there, security will be subtle, security will be friendly based on the threat level we’re at today.”

A student tries to figure out a major that suits her.

Bored by the Chinese courses he was majoring in, Zuo Cheng, 18, couldn’t imagine having to drag himself into class day after day, week after week, for four years. After rounds of examinations and interviews, he managed to transfer to the Department of International Accounting.

“It may seem like I’ve wasted a year and have to start college all over again, but now that I’ve settled on a field I’ll be able to concentrate,” Zuo said.

Zou is not alone.

“When we were in high school very few of us understood how maajor relates to career. Many students picked colleges before majors, only to discover their mistake a few weeks after arrival on the campus,” said Jiang Xin, 20, who was able to switch to electrical engineering and automation from physics. He said that physics graduates had few other options besides going into teaching. He added that a career in education just didn’t suit him.

“I should have better job prospects(前景)and the chance to earn more money once I graduate,” Jiang said.

A new survey, of 2,500 students nationwide starting in September this year, suggests that as much as 35 percent of the students are disappointed by their courses. The least happy are those majoring in bioengineering, traditional Chinese medicine and math, while students of architecture, economics and foreign languages are the happiest, owing to good career prospects.

However, Shao Yanfang, who works at the admissions office of University of International Business and Economics in Beijing, advised students to consider both short-and long-term goals.

“After graduation do you want to find yourself in a job very specifically related to your college major? Or, would you like to posses the knowledge and skills that will enable you to work in many areas? There are the questions students need to consider. Above all, your choice of major should be based on your own interests, abilities and personality.” Shao said.

How would you like an easy way to earn $2,500? All you have to do is to sit around and wait for your meals. There's a catch however. You have to stay in a chicken cage with a stranger for a whole week. There are no books or television or radio for amusement. You can't leave until the week is up. And a camera will be recording your every move.

Two people actually took the job. The idea came from Rob Thompson, a video artist. He wanted to make a film about the way animals are  treated. His goal was  to raise people's awareness of the living conditions of animals that are raised for food.

He decided to pay $5,000 out of his own savings to two people who were willing to live like chickens for a week.

To Rob’s surprise, quite a few people answered his advertisement. He had interviewed and selected Eric, a 24-year-old restaurant worker, and Para, a 24-year-old chemist. The plan was for them to spend seven days together in a chicken cage that was six feet long and three feet wide. A camera would record their experiences, which would take place in an art museum.

The week was long and difficult. They slept on a hard wooden floor. They couldn't stand up without hanging their heads. They ate vegetables and drank water from a garden hosepipe. Their only privacy was a toilet surrounded by a curtain. There were no sinks, mirrors, or toothbrushes in the cage. Their only inspiration was the two framed checks that hung on the wall outside the cage. Visitors who came here were warned, “Do not feed the humans.”

Finally it was over, and Para and Eric appeared from their cage. They had survived the week, and they each had a $2,500 check in their hands. When Rob Thompson opened the cage,  Eric  came  out,  changed  into  clean clothes, and ate a chocolate bar right away. “It's great to be able to stand up,” he said. Para just changed her clothes and left. After a week of visitors and reporters watching her, she

didn't want to talk to anyone.

What kind of person is Rob Thompson?

   A. He is curious about people's personal life.

   B. He is kind-hearted to animals.

   C. He hates people around.

   D. He likes to help poor people.

The underlined word “catch” probably means _____.

   A. unsolved problem                                  B. surprising wonder

   C. unbelievable fact                                    D. hidden difficulty

Rob offered the money because he wanted _____ .

   A. to see if there were any people who would like to live in a cage

   B. to show the public how terrible animals' life could be

   C. to make more money by publishing the recorded videotapes

   D. to improve housing conditions of working people like Eric

Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?

   A. Easy Way to Earn $ 2,500.                     B. Do Not Feed the Humans.

   C. Living Like a Chicken.                   D. Getting Along Well Anyway.
