D Twenty years ago, I began studying how people become millionaires. Surveying people of the first-class neighborhoods across the country, I discovered something strange. Many people who live in expensive homes and drive expensive cars don’t have much wealth. They may earn a fair amount of money, but they spend it all. Then I discovered something even stranger that many people who have a great deal of wealth don’t live in first-class neighborhoods. In one large city area I surveyed, fewer than half the millionaires live in high-rent districts. What most people don’t realize is that wealth is different from income. If you make $ 1 million a year and spend $ 1 million, you’re not getting wealthier, and you’re just living high. Wealth is what you get over a period of time, not what you spend. How do you become wealthy? There, too, most people have it wrong. It’s seldom luck or money you receive from someone who has died or even intelligence that leads to your wealth. Wealth is more often the result of a person’s hard work, perseverance and, most of all self-control. Who tends to become wealthy? The average person with a worth of $ 1 million or more is usually a businessman who has lived all his adult life in the same town. He owns a small factory, a few chain stores or a service company. He marries once. He lives in a middle-class neighborhood. And he has made his money in a fair way. Attitude is the greatest difference between millionaires and the rest of us. 68.Which of the following is the stranger thing the author discovered? A.Many people who live in expensive homes and drive expensive cars have much wealth. B.Only a small number of the people who have a great deal of wealth live in first-class neighborhoods. C.50 percent of the millionaires live in high-rent district. D.Many people who have a great deal of wealth live in expensive houses. 69.Which of the following does the author lead you to believe? A.The average person with a worth of $ 1 million is likely to live in a middle-class neighborhood. B.The average person with a worth of $ 1 million or more usually is likely to be a teacher. C.Those who have a worth of $ 1 million or more never end their marriage. D.Many people who have a worth of $ 1 million or more make their money in an unfair way. 70.Who is likely to become wealthy according to the passage? A.Samuel is lucky and has just received a small fortune from his relative. B.Jason is clever and works hard but lacks the ability to make himself do the things he ought to do. C.Adam is a man of great determination and he always makes his money in a dishonest way. D.Ralph works hard and determines to do something even though it is difficult. Above all, he can control his own desires and feelings. 查看更多

The West began to take more notice of the East. The fifth volume of an enormous work reassessing the Chinese contribution to science and technology is to be published next year. The first volume, which was published twenty years ago,set the tone for the whole work.In it,evidence was given to show that many inventions which, until then, western historians had claimed forEurope, were made first in China. The attempt to rewrite the intellectual history of the world was not received without protest by some reputable historians. However, the evidence that has been presented so far in the first four volumes has persuaded many historians who were skeptical at first.China’s invention of paper, printing, the magnetic compass and gunpowder has never been disputed, but this new history has added advanced bridge design, mechanical clocks, paddle boats and many other inventions to the list.

It is a matter of common observation that although money income keeps going up over the years, we never seem to become richer. Prices are rising continuously. This condition is what we call inflation: the money supply is becoming inflated so that each unit of it becomes less valuable. We have got used to higher and higher rates of inflation in recent years. What could be bought twenty years ago for one pound now costs well over 2 pounds. And at present this rate of inflation seems to be rising rather than falling. If in the real world our money incomes go up at the same rate as prices do. One might think that inflation doesn’t matter. But it does ------.When money is losing value it also loses one of the qualities of a good money—stability of value. It is no longer acceptable as a store of value; and it becomes an unsuitable means of delayed payment. Nobody wants to hold a wasting possession, so people try to get rid of money as quickly as possible. Inflation therefore simply stimulates(刺激)our spending and discourages saving.

Five years ago, David Smith wore an expensive suit to work every day. “I was a clothes addict(迷),” he jokes. “I used to carry a fresh suit to work with me so I could change if my clothes got wrinkled(皱的).” Today David wears casual clothes — khaki pants and a sports shirt — to the office. He hardly ever wears a necktie. “I’m working harder than ever,” David says, “and I need to feel comfortable.”

More and more companies are allowing their office workers to wear casual clothes to work. In the United States, the changes from formal to casual office wear have been slow. In the early 1990s, many companies allowed their workers to wear casual clothes on Friday (but only on Friday). This became known as “dress-down Friday” or “casual Friday”. “What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit for workers has really become an everyday thing,” said business adviser Maisly Jones.?

Why have so many companies started allowing their workers to wear casual clothes? One reason is that it's easier for a company to attract new workers if it has a casual dress code. “A lot of young people don't want to dress up for work,” says the owner of a software company, “so it's hard to hire people if you have a conservative dress code.” Another reason is that people seem happier and more productive when they are wearing comfortable clothes. In a study made by Levi Strauss and Company, 85 percent of employers said that casual dress has a side effect on work. Supporters of casual office wear also say that a casual dress code helps them save money. “Suits are expensive, if you have to wear one every day,” one person said. “For the same amount of money, you can buy a lot more casual clothes.”?

A. they make him feel at ease when working?

B. he cannot afford to buy expensive clothes?

C. he looks handsome in casual clothes?

D. he no longer works for any company?

3.According to this passage, which of the following is FALSE?

A. Many workers don’t like a conservative dress code.?

B. Comfortable clothes make workers more productive.?

C. A casual clothes code is welcomed by young workers.?

D. All the employers in the U.S. are for casual office wear.?

4.According to this passage, which of the following is TRUE?

A. Company workers started to dress down about twenty years ago.?

B. Dress-down has become an everyday phenomenon since the early 1990s.?

C. “Dress-down Friday” was first given as a favor from employers.?

D. Many workers want to wear casual clothes to impress people.?
