                                                                  Lowood School
   There were about eighty girls in the schoolroom, divided into four classes. The oldest girls were in the fourth class, and the youngest were in the first class. I was in the first class.
   All four classes had their lessons in the same large and very cold schoolroom. We had to sit there quietly, not saying a word, until the teachers came into the room together. The lessons-Math, History,French-were not at all interesting, and always followed the same pattern. First, we read some pages in a book and
then our teacher asked us questions. I tried to listen, but I soon got bored .
   After four hours, there was a lunch break, and we all went outside. Because it was winter, it was very
cold. Very soon, a bell rang, and lessons started again.
   Three weeks passed. One afternoon, the head teacher, whose name was Miss Temple, came into the
schoolroom. Mr. Brocklehurst was with her, and we all stood up as they entered. I stood behind an older
girl because I did not want Mr. Brocklehurst to see me.
   Mr. Brocklehurst walked slowly round the room. Everybody was very quiet. I closed my eyes and
wished he would leave. My hands started to shake, and I dropped my book.
   Mr. Brocklehurst stopped walking and looked straight at me.
   "Ah! The new girl," he said. "Come here, Jane Eyre!" Then he pointed at two of the older girls. "You two girls-put Jane Eyre on that high chair!" he said.
   "Look at Jane Eyre, everybody!" Mr. Brocklehurst said. "This child is bad. She will be punished! Miss
Temple! Teachers! Girls Do not talk to this child."
   Then he spoke to me again. "Jane Eyre, you must stand on that chair for two hours," he said. "You are a bad girl!"
   That evening, as I cried and cried alone, Miss Temple saw me. She came to me and held my hand. She was very kind.
   "You are a good pupil, Jane," she said. "And you are not a bad girl. I am your friend."
   "Thank you, Miss Temple," I said.

4. The Esteem Needs--After our first three needs are fairly well met, we try to satisfy a fourth need. This is a need for recognition, respect, reputation. The need has two parts: self esteem(thinking well of ourselves) and the esteem of others.

5. The Self--Actualization Needs--The highest need of man is to actualize himself, to achieve his full potential, to become all that he might be. This need is one that no one ever satisfies completely, partly because we are too busy trying to satisfy our lower needs.

If Dr. Maslow is correct, those are the things we are after. Our work, rest, play--whatever we do--is done in an effort to meet one or more of those needs.

Eleven-year-old Evan Green doesn’t want to save just one tree-he wants to save a whole rainforest!

In the Redwood City, Calif., a boy started a group called the Red Dragon Conservation Team four years ago to do just that. So far, the team’s members have raised $4,500. That’s enough to purchase and protect more than 16 acres of rainforest in Costa Rica through the Center for Ecosystem survival.

Every year, thousands of square miles of rainforest are destroyed worldwide. Logging(伐木)and farming are mostly likely to blame, scientists say. The loss is terrible news for animals and people. Even though rainforests cover less than 2 percent of the earth, they are home to half the world’s plants and animals. Rainforests also provide water and help control the earth’s climate.

Evan’s work to save the rainforests recently earned him a Barron prize for Young Heroes. The prizes are given to children or teenagers who have made a positive difference in the world. Evan’s goal is “to save enough rainforests to last forever”. He won’t have to do it alone. His actions have already inspired other kids to chip in. One girl asked for donations instead of presents on her birthday. She raised $850. Other kids are starting their own conservation teams.

Evan says everyone can help the planet-even by taking small steps such as recycling. He and his family try to make a difference every day. “We recycle, we try to limit our garbage… we’ve been walking a little more, and we buy local food,” Evan said.

A MENTORING (导师制) program is giving life changing opportunities to Banbury youth.

Young Inspirations was founded two years ago to provide mentoring sessions for students and unemployed young adults aged 11 to 21.

Alex Goldberg, the program's founder, said; "We set up Young Inspirations because we wanted to give young people experiences which will potentially be life changing and broaden their outlook.

"We try to create work experience opportunities that will really make a difference to our youth. For example, we've secured internships (实习) with world-famous firms such as Honda.

"At a time of funding cutbacks where schools are finding it more and more difficult to offer this kind of mentoring, it is extremely important that these opportunities are available both to help youth with their school work and grades and to give them opportunities which may help shape their futures. " Kieran Hepburn, 14, is one of a group of Banbury youth who has benefited from the program so far. In October the Banbury School pupil was accompanied by Young Inspirations staff to Paris where he was an observer at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's (UNESCO) International Youth Forum (论坛).

The event was held for young people from around the world, to seek their views on how the future of youth and education should look. Kieran joined several hundred observers mostly in their 20s and was the only UK school pupil to attend the event. Kieran thinks the trip was a life changing experience. " Before we left I didn't quite know what to make of it but when we got there we didn't stop, it was amazing," he said, " We went to three or four hours of debates each day and then did something cultural each afternoon. "

The main theme of the forum was how youth can drive change in political and public life. It dealt with issues (问题) such as drug abuse, violence and unemployment.

Kieran said: " It has really helped me to improve my confidence and social skills as well as my school grades and I was voted most improved pupil at school in August. "
