The world is getting smaller and smaller, but gaps between people have always existed and
will continue to exist for the foreseeable future. Different sets of cultures, belief systems and
values have shaped today's world. To avoid misunderstandings, we need to learn not only
other languages, but the cultures behind the languages as well. To understand English-speaking
people, we first need to understand their culture, history and way of life. British and American
Culture Reader
will give students a good general idea of life and culture in the United Kingdom
and the United States.
The articles in this series vividly describe the structure of Western society from the
perspectives (视角) of ordinary people - and their own experiences of life. As an American
living in the United Kingdom, I am in a better position to know what's best about American
culture through the eyes of my British friends. Actually, all the articles in this series are written
by native English speakers who have lived in the West for a significant period. This ensures
that the text presents an accurate picture of life in the English-speaking world.
As a children's publisher, I know that young students in particular need lively lessons that
will engage their curiosity and desire to learn. Therefore, topics have been carefully chosen to
include those of greatest relevance to children, including games, schools, clothes and festivals.
The series also provides an interesting contrast of British and American culture, which gives
young Chinese readers an insight into the differences between them and therefore enables the
students to better understand the two countries. Being aware that the teacher will pass on the
information to students, the authors have made sure to present the text in a light-hearted and
fun way, with interesting stories inserted where appropriate.
British and American Culture Reader is a reflection of our society. Readers of this series
will shake off the bad stereotypes (旧框框) that they hold about Westerners and may be
surprised to find how similar Westerners' way of life is to their own in many ways. I hope
you enjoy reading the articles as much as I have enjoyed writing them.

For centuries, the only form of written correspondence (通信)was the letters, letters were, and are, sent by some form of postal service, the history of which goes back a long way .Indeed, the Egyptians began sending letters from about 2000 BC,as did the Chinese a thousand years later.

Of course, modern postal service now are much more developed and faster, depending as they do on cars and planes for delivery. Yet they are still too slow for some people to send urgent documents (紧急文件)and letters.

The invention of the fax (传真) machine increased the speed of delivering documents even more. When you send a fax,you are sending a copy of a piece of correspondence to someone by telephone service. It was not until the early 1980s that such a service was developed enough for businesses to be able to fax documents to each other.

The fax service is still very much in use when copies of documents require to be sent ,but, as a way of fast correspondence, it has been largely taken the place of by email ,Email is used to describe messages sent form one computer user to another.

There are advantages and disadvantages with emails. If you send some one an email , then he will receive it extremely quickly .Normal postal services are rather slow as far as speed of delivery is concerned.

However, if you write something by email, which you might later regret ,and send it immediately, there is no chance for second thoughts. At least, if you are posting a letter you have to address and seal(封)the envelope and take it to the post box. There is plenty of time to change your mind .The message is think before you email!

“Now I just don’t believe that.” Surely all of us, at some point, have watched a movie and thought: It’s simply badly researched, or, the makers must think we’re fools.

If movies were completely scientifically accurate, they’d probably be as interesting as a Physics 101 lecture. In real life, there are no explosions in space, gas usually doesn’t explode from a lit cigarette, and Bruce Willis / Jackie Chan / Will Smith would most likely be in a coma(昏迷) after getting kicked in the head.

Recently, the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph ran a humorous piece on unconvincing tech moments from some top movies. Let’s see what they are all about.

Telegraph writer Tom Chivers’ first example is from the end-of-the-world movie Independence Day, in which a character comes up with a virus capable of destroying Windows, the computer system the alien(外星人的) spacecraft uses. “It’s a good thing they didn’t have Norton antivirus,” jokes Chivers.

It’s just one case of a movie that takes a lot of license with its science. Another one Chivers mentions is from Star Wars, where glowing beams of light traveling through space look very impressive. The problem is that in space there are no air particles(颗粒) for the light to reflect off. In reality, they’d not be seen, which wouldn’t look so cool on the big screen.

Chivers’ second piece of Star Wars nonsense is the sound the fighters make in the movies: “ the bellow(咆哮) of an elephant mixed with a car driving on a wet road”. But sound needs a medium to travel through, like air. In space, there wouldn’t actually be any sound at all.

Few people would deny that the mind-bending Matrix films make for great viewing, but for Chivers, the science in the movies is a little silly.

And finally: as Chivers points out, DAN is not replaceable. But this bit of elementary genetics passed the makers of the 2002 Bond film Die another Day by. In the film the villain(坏人) has “gene therapy” to change his appearance and his DNA, which is completely impossible.

1.What does the text mainly deal with?

A. Plots of some famous movies.      B. Characters in space movies.

C. Popularity of space movies.          D. Mistakes made in some movies.

2.From the first two paragraphs we can know that some movie makers ____.

A. went against general knowledge of science

B. didn’t pay attention to the viewers’ real demand

C. overestimated viewers’ appreciation of movies.

D. didn’t try their best to improve the quality of the movies.

3.What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

A. The newspapers.                   B. Unconvincing tech moments

C. Some top movies.         D. Heroes in the movies.

4.We can learn from Paragraph 7 that ____.

A. most people like Matrix films

B. the truth of Matrix films remains in doubt

C. few people think Matrix films silly

D. Chivers thinks science is unacceptable

Chinese female film stars, like Gong Li and Zhang Ziyi, due to the charm of their films, have set a good image for Chinese women in the world. Compared with Chinese women, the image of Chinese men is not so good in the eyes of Western women, the Shanghai Evening Post reported.
In March 2006, Zhang Jiehai, a doctorate(博士学位) holder at the Sociology Institute of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, led a research team to investigate how Western women look at Chinese men. The survey shows that many Western women think Chinese men are mostly known for their care for the family. Chinese men, as the Western women say, are willing to spend money for women. As to their shortcomings, Western women think that Chinese men do not have good manners and that some Chinese men have the habit of spitting everywhere, keeping nails and hair long, picking their noses and ears in public places, and not cleaning their teeth thoroughly. These bad habits make many Western women think that Chinese men are unwilling to take care of their personal image.
The survey was carried out in two ways, by questionnaires and interviews. All the respondents(调查对象) agreed that Chinese men show much tender loving care for the family and that many Chinese men do know how to respect women. They open the door for women and carry their handbags for them. For some American women, the bad image of Chinese men in the world is largely because of Hollywood films. In many Hollywood films, Chinese men usually do not have a good image. But this has been changed by Hong Kong film star Chow Yun-Fat. After the Chinese film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was shown in cinemas in the United States in 2002, many Westerners began to change their impression of Chinese men.
