Imagine if you got paid to go shopping, and could keep the things you bought with other people's money.Does this sound like a dream?Well, for some, like Amy Knott, from Chicago, this is their job.

Amy Knott is a mystery shopper. She is paid to visit a store, eat in a restaurant, go to the bank, stay in a hotel, get her hair cut, fill up her gas tank, or see a movie. She pretends to be an ordinary customer, but afterwards she writes a report about her experience, commenting on things like:How long did you wait in line? Was the food hot?Did the cashier say “thank you”?Did the restroom have soap and tissue? This gives companies useful information about how they can improve their customer service.

So who can become a mystery shopper? You do not need any special qualifications or experience, but you need a good memory, an eye for detail, and good writing skills. When you apply for the job, instead of an interview, you will be asked to write about something like:“What was your best shopping experience?”

What is the pay like? For a 15-minute visit to a store, you might get $10 and the cost of what you buy.For a haircut, you might get $35 and the cost of the haircut. Most mystery shoppers do this job in their spare time, like Byron Jenner, who visits a restaurant on his lunch break every day and earns about $500 extra a month. But others, like Amy, make it their full-time career, and earn up to $40,000 a year.

“I love mystery shopping.I can't believe I actually get paid to have fun,” she says.“For example, tonight my husband and I will go out, have a $150 dinner, go to stay at a luxury hotel, and I'll walk away with $300.”

1.Steve: One of my friends is always copying me.It’s getting really annoying, and I don’t know what to do.Help!

2.Adam: I did badly in school, so my dad switched me to another school to help me.What can I do to stay out of trouble at my new school? My mouth got me in trouble in the first place.

3.Jenny: Some kids are making fun of me because I’m in honors math and read 800-page books.Isn’t that something to be proud of?

4.Frank: I have a problem: I can’t socialize.I’m really shy, and I’m already a freshman in high school.Can you help me, please?

5.Wendy: I always make honor roll, but I’m going to high school next year. How can I manage this: keep up my A’s and B’s, and at the same time, do other after class activities I’m interested in.

A

B

A wise man once said, “It’s better to do a few things well than a lot of things poorly.” As you make the transition to a tougher workload, focus on maintaining a balance of schoolwork, scouting, other activities, friends, family and just the games you are enjoying playing. You may always think of this: we can learn things not only in classes, but outside of classes. You’ll be happier, not to mention more successful at the things you like.

If you’re having trouble keeping up, ask your teachers if they can recommend someone to tutor you for an hour after school.I know it sounds like torture, but trust me.I was struggling through math and eventually my mum made me get a tutor.I was very angry. But it turned out that with the tutor’s help, I could get through my work in an hour instead of three hours at home.So after a few weeks, I caught up with the rest of the class.

C

D

You should be flattered—he looks up to you.But I understand; it’s completely up-setting.My little sister went through a stage in which she constantly bought the same exact clothes as me.But after a few months she turned to someone else.Wait it out for a while, and your friend will probably discover his own sense of style. Then let him know you think he’s cool, especially he does his own thing.Your comment will spare him embarrassment, boost his self-esteem and, ultimately, get him to stop cloning around.

You’re right.Intelligence is a quality that everyone wants, and as you get older it’s going to be what people love and respect about you.And yet, just as hyper-social people need to make time for schoolwork, you might benefit from a little balance as well.In addition to exercising your brain with classes and books, exercise your spirit with music, sports, Scouts or other activities.Bonus: Some of those kids who laughed at you might someday realize how cool you actually are and shut up.

E

F

The fact that you recognize what the problem is and want to fix it is fantastic.Avoid becoming a regular in the schoolmaster’s office, and make a good first impression in the new place. This doesn’t mean you have to be a top student.Jus do your work, speak up in class when the teacher asks a question and seek extra help if your grades start to slip. And stay involved in after-class activities so that you can keep yourself too busy to get into trouble and help you burn off some of the energy that tends to land you in hot water.

A teacher once gave me this great advice: Prepare a conversation in your head before going into an uncomfortable social situation. It sounds like a lot of work, but it’s easy – and it works! For example, if you know you’re hiking a certain mountain with Scouts this weekend, go online and Google the area you’re hiking.Find an interesting or funny fact or two and talk about them when your troop is climbing up the mountain. As for the “cool” kids, forget them.Coolness runs out after high school.

A child's birthday party should be one of the most fun events of the year, for the birthday child, the guests
and even for the hosts. The three keys to a successful child's birthday party is planning, more planning, and
even more planning. Kid's birthday party games are important ingredients of every party and must be thought
out and arranged in advance. Luckily, there is no shortage of fun and interesting games to keep kids busy and
happy, so it is not difficult to come up with more than enough ideas.
It is important to remember that children have a far shorter attention span (长度) than adults. For that
reason, the host should not expect that one or two activities will keep the guests entertained for a long period
of time. Plan a lot of short, fun games that will satisfy their needs. Make sure that the games are age
appropriate:"duck duck goose" will keep little ones happy for a while, but certainly will not work for pre-teens.
"Scavenger or treasure hunts" are great kid's birthday party games for any age-just make sure that it's neither
too difficult nor too simple.
Be sure to have enough ideas in mind so that it is possible to "throw away" an activity that is not going well.
Kid's birthday party games should be simple and fun. If a game is started and no one seems to be having any
fun, simply end that activity and start another. Kids like changes and will not mind a bit. If the party is held
indoors, it is a good idea to clear a room of breakables and make that room the game headquarters. For outdoor
parties, make sure that the play area is free from potential dangers and that the games do not involve tree
climbing or other activities that are likely to cause injury.
Finally, remember to have prizes and treats on hand to reward the players. Prizes do not need to be large or
expensive. Kid's birthday party games are about teamwork, not rewards. Be sure to have prizes not only for
the winners of the games, but for every child in attendance, so that each child goes home with some fun
memento of the party and the time spent with friends.

Foxes and farmers have never got on well. These small dog-like animals have long been scolded for killing farm animals. They are officially regarded as harmful and farmers try to keep their numbers down by shooting or poisoning them.

Farmers can also call on the services of their local hunt to control the fox population.Hunters hunt a fox across the countryside, with a group of specially trained dogs, followed by men and women riding horses. When the dogs finally catch the fox they kill it or a hunter shoots it.

People who take part in hunting think of it as a sport; they wear a special uniform of red coats and white trousers, and follow strict rules of behavior. But owning a horse and hunting regularly is expensive, so most hunters are wealthy.

It is estimated that up to 100,000 people watch or take part in fox hunting. But over the last couple of decades the number of people who object to fox hunting, because they think it is cruel, has risen sharply.Nowadays it is rare for a hunt to pass off without some kind of confrontation (冲突)between hunters and hunt saboteurs (阻拦者).Sometimes these incidents lead to violence, but mostly saboteurs interfere with the hunt by misleading riders and disturbing the trail of the fox’s smell, which the dogs follow.

Noisy confrontations between hunters and saboteurs become so common that they are almost as much a part of hunting as the hunting of foxes itself. But this year supporters of fox hunting face a much bigger threat to their support.A labor Party Member of the Parliament , Mike Foster , is trying to get parliament to pass a new law which will make the hunting of wild animals with dogs illegal (非法的).If the law is passed, wild animals like foxes will be protected under the ban in Britain.

A.by using violence                                         B.by taking legal action

C.by beating the fox hunters                            D.by standing in line to stop the hunting

4.It can be inferred from the passage that _______________.

A.killing foxes with poison is illegal

根据文章内容,从下面A.B.C.D.E.F六个选项中选出能概括每一段主题的最佳选项, 选

项中有一项是多余选项.

A.Think while you are reading

B.Select a proper material

C.Five suggestions for achieving better results

D.Read loudly

E.Read on

F.Use a dictionary at a right time

Effective reading should adopt a correct way, and then you can get more by paying less. Here are some hints for reading effectively.

1.___________

Don’t choose a rather difficult book or a too easy one for yourself to read.A book full of new words will make you feel discouraged quickly. To understand those new words, you have to turn to the dictionary quite often. It seems that you are not reading the book but the dictionary. It has no fun at all! On the contrary, a too easy one will only waste your time and cannot do any help. The two extremes may at last make you give up reading. So it’s better for you to find a proper book with no more than five new words on each page.

2._____________

If you come across a new word, do not look it up in a dictionary as quickly as possible.Leave it alone and guess the meaning of it based on the content of the text.        This ability is quite necessary in reading. If you know your guess is right later, you will be highly excited at your “success”, and your interest in reading is well stimulated. If a word really hinders you from understanding the whole passage, turn to the dictionary by then.I am sure you can remember this word very well, as it has left you such a deep impression for its “troublesome image.”

3.___________

To comprehend what you are reading, you should think while you are reading, then from your own ideas on some special issues.Try to scribble some lines-a very short journal, to express your ideas.Your writing does not need to be quite formal but expressive. This practice can make you communicate with the original English authors.Day by day, your way of thinking in English will turn into a native way, which is quite important for English writing.

4._____________

Language has its own beauty, no matter Chinese or English.Don’t merely take English as a “test”.Take it as an “entertainment” instead and you will enjoy it through learning.

Maybe you should find some beautiful literary works such as a prose or a poem to read, if you like.Try top read them as loudly and impassionedly as you can.During this process, not only you can enjoy yourself by the great emotions of the writers, but also your pronunciation and your manner of speaking English will be improved.

5.______________

The last but not the least, keep on reading. If you cannot keep it as a habit, you will suffer from paying without gaining.
