In each passage, you gave us some new words with their Chinese translation. However, as far as my knowledge, I think you should give us not only the Chinese meaning but also the English meaning so as to know the words more accurately.
【小题5】I’m an editor of the English Monthly of our school. I have a question, that is, how to say the position of the paper e.g. , 编辑; 责任编辑and so on. A．Thank you for your suggestion. We may try that in some future issues of CR. I think the best way to improve your reading vocabulary is to be able to guess the meaning of the word from the other words around it. Also, if you have an English dictionary, it is good to look up the words and them mark them down in a notebook and review them later on. Then if you really want to learn how to use the words, try using them in conversation or in writing. Hope this helps.

B．The best way for you to learn the different positions in a newspaper or magazine is to get a copy of an all English magazine or newspaper and then copy down the different positions. There are also titles such as Managing Editor, reporter, Copy Editor, Photo Editor and Layout Editor. I hope this helps. Each issue we try to read very carefully each article and its translation to make sure there are no mistakes, but unfortunately a few mistakes always get by. But you encourage us to keep improving, so thank you.

E. Yes, we do have several students who help us translate some of the articles in our magazine. We contact these translators directly after interviewing their translation work. Afterwards we assign the articles to them for translation. If you are interested in being one of our translators you can send us some information about yourself and a sample of your translation work.
F.Thank you for helping us to promote CR. We’re glad it’s helpful to your students. We always try to include articles that reflect real life. It’s our hope that CR will not only improve students’ English but also open up a different worldview.

I live in Japan, where electronic items are a way of life, so it is no surprise that many students carry these little electronic dictionaries. E-dictionaries may be light and compact（简洁的） more so than any paper dictionary.  1___ It depends on which one you buy. To me, these are pretty much the limits to their advantages.

I think e-dictionaries should be limited in their use in classrooms.   2____

E-dictionaries are much more expensive. In Japan, they cost as little as 10,000 yen （US$100）much as 40,000 yen, depending on how many functions you want （or think you want） and depending on how fashionable you are. My trusty Random House paper dictionary is copyrighted at1995, cost me a mere US$12.95 plus tax.

E-dictionaries are more fragile（易碎的）. Drop your paper dictionary. Go ahead. Hold it above your head and drop it.     3  

E-dictionaries need batteries. Batteries are temperature sensitive. Batteries cost money, too.

E-dictionaries have keypads. Typing in the spelling of a word is harder and more time consuming than looking through pages and using the index at the top of each page.

_4____ Such little devices beep（嘟嘟声） when you press the buttons, but it is very disturbing to some people in a classroom situation or library.

Finally, let’s consider making corrections or additions. No dictionary is perfect, paper version or electronic. However, when you find something you’d like to change in the e-dictionary, you can’t do anything about it. You can pencil in some notes with the paper type. Similarly, if you learn a word that isn’t in the dictionary, a few notes of a pencil make it easy to increase its memory capacity.

__5__ And, for those students whose habit is to mark certain words with a highlight pen for ease of future reference, again, the paper dictionary wins out.

    Effective reading should adopt a correct way, and then you can get more by paying less．Here are some hints for reading effectively．

1.___________

Don’t choose a rather difficult book or a too easy one for yourself to read．A book full of new words will make you feel discouraged quickly．To understand those new words, you have to turn to the dictionary quite often．It seems that you are not reading the book but the dictionary．It has no fun at all! On the contrary, a too easy one will only waste your time and cannot do any help．The two extremes may at last make you give up reading．So it’s better for you to find a proper book with no more than five new words on each page．

If you come across a new word, do not look it up in a dictionary as quickly as possible．Leave it alone and guess the meaning of it based on the content of the text．        This ability is quite necessary in reading．If you know your guess is right later, you will be highly excited at your “success”, and your interest in reading is well stimulated．If a word really hinders you from understanding the whole passage, turn to the dictionary by then．I am sure you can remember this word very well, as it has left you such a deep impression for its “troublesome image．”

To comprehend what you are reading, you should think while you are reading, then from your own ideas on some special issues．Try to scribble some lines-a very short journal, to express your ideas．Your writing does not need to be quite formal but expressive．This practice can make you communicate with the original English authors．Day by day, your way of thinking in English will turn into a native way, which is quite important for English writing．

Language has its own beauty, no matter Chinese or English．Don’t merely take English as a “test”．Take it as an “entertainment” instead and you will enjoy it through learning．

Maybe you should find some beautiful literary works such as a prose or a poem to read, if you like．Try top read them as loudly and impassionedly as you can．During this process, not only you can enjoy yourself by the great emotions of the writers, but also your pronunciation and your manner of speaking English will be improved．

The last but not the least, keep on reading．If you cannot keep it as a habit, you will suffer from paying without gaining．
