I grew up in a house where the TV was seldom turned on and with one wall in my bedroom entirely lined with bookshelves, most of my childhood was spent on books I could get hold of. In fact, I grew up thinking of reading as natural as breathing and books unbelievably powerful in shaping perspectives (观点) by creating worlds we could step into, take part in, and live in.
With this unshakable belief, I, at fourteen, decided to become a writer. Here too, reading became useful. Every writer starts off knowing that he has something to say, but being unable to find the right ways to say it. He has to find his own voice by reading widely and discovering which parts of the writers he agrees or disagrees with, or agrees with so strongly that it reshapes his own world. He cannot write without loving to read, because only through reading other people’s writing can one discover what works, what doesn’t and, in the end, together with lots of practice, what voice he has.
Now I am in college, and have come to realize how important it is to read fiction (文学作品).As a law student, my reading is in fact limited to subject matter—the volume (量) of what I have to read for classes every week means there is little time to read anything else. Such reading made it all the clearer to me that I live in a very small part in this great place called life. Reading fiction(小说) reminds me that there is life beyond my own. It allows me to travel across the high seas and along the Silk Road, all from the comfort of my own armchair, to experience, though secondhand, exciting experiences that I wouldn't necessarily be able to have in my lifetime

GUANGZHOU,China-Chinese warships headed toward Somali waters Friday to fight against piracy(海盗), the first time the communist country has sent ships on a mission that could involve fighting so far beyond its own waters.

The mission to the Gulf of Aden, which has been threatened by increasingly pirate attacks in recent months, marks a major step in the navy's evolution from mostly guarding China's coasts to patrolling waters far from home.

The move was welcomed by the U.S.military, which has been escorting(护航)ships in the region along with India,Russia and the European Union. But analysts predicted the Chinese intervention could be troubling to some Asian nations who might see it as a sign of the Chinese military becoming more aggressive.

The naval force that set sail from southern Hainan on Friday afternoon included a supply ship and two destroyers-armed with guided missiles, special forces and two helicopters.China announced it was joining the anti-piracy mission Tuesday after the U.N.Security Council authorized nations to conduct land and air attacks on pirate bases.

  Pentagon(五角大楼)spokesman Maj.Stewart Upton said the U.S.welcomed China's move.

Pirates working out of Somalia have made an estimated$30 million this year, seizing more than 40 vessels off the country's 1,880-mile(3,000-kilometer)coastline.Most of the attacks have occurred in the Gulf of Aden, one of the world's busiest shipping lanes.

Sending ships to the area helped stoke national pride among Chinese who feel their increasingly wealthy nation should be playing a bigger role in world affairs.

For several decades, China has kept a massive army focused on protecting its land borders, while the country's navy was relatively weak. But in recent years, as China became more deeply involved in the global economy, it concluded that a stronger navy was needed to protect its increasing sea shipments of oil, raw materials and other goods.

Directions: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from the list A-F for each paragraph.  There is one extra heading which you do not need.(本题请涂在答题卡上)

(E)

A.The disadvantage(s) of credit cards.

B.Clever choice of credit cards.

C.The benefits credits cards bring.

D.Avoidance of economic trouble by using credit cards wrongly.

E. People’s misunderstanding about credit cards.

F. Ways to save on the interest.

80.______ Although credit cards are already a more acceptable part of the financial dealings, they are still regarded, especially in the time of a serious economic crisis, by many as being a major part of the “live now pay later” system.  Along with hire-purchase regulations, credit cards, according to some, provide encouragement to spend more money.  However, it’s only the fool who is dominated by the temptation to live, temporarily at least, beyond their means, and such people would no doubt manage to do so even without credit cards.

81.______ Advertising campaigns have already promoted a growing realization of the advantages of these small pieces of plastic.  They avoid the need to carry large amounts of cash and are always useful in emergencies.  And the monthly credit card bill is a loyal booker keeping your monthly purchase record and indicating your buying habits.

82.______ All the credit card organizations charge interest on a monthly basis which may work out as high as two percent a year.  But sensible purchase using a card can mean that you obtain up to seven weeks interest-free credit.  Using the card abroad, where items frequently take a long time to be included on your account, can extend this period even further.

83.______ It is worthwhile consulting more credit card companies before deciding on a particular credit card.  It is necessary to consider the amount of credit granted, interest rates, which may vary slightly; the number and range of outlets, though most cards cover major stores.

84.______ Undoubtedly, if used wisely, a credit card can cost nothing, or at lease help to tide you over a period of financial difficulty.  However, we should also remember that the wrong use of the little plastic may drag us deep into financial troubles.  More than half of the American personal bankruptcy(破产) and credit failure cases are connected with the wrong use of the credit card.  Therefore, every time you open your wallet and reach for a credit card, remember to ask yourself:” Is the item necessary to me?” and “Do I really need so many credit cards?”

Pride and Prejudice for the Modern Woman

Let us imagine how Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen's most famous work, might be updated, 200 years on.

Austen's popularity is rooted in her intelligence. But today she would certainly have had a very different life, as would her characters. Here's my own suggestion...

It is a truth finally and universally acknowledged that a single woman with brains deserves to have equal opportunities to men, however disadvantaged she may feel by sexism.

" My dear husband, " said his hopeful wife one day, " have you heard that the local store, standing empty for so long, is taken over by a bright young businesswoman? "

Her dull and indifferent(漠不关心的)husband replied that he had not."But it is, it is, " she replied excitedly.Mr Dull-Husband made no reply.

"Don't you want to know her plans? " she cried with some impatience.

"Well, clearly you think it matters to your silly little head…so I'd better listen."

"Well, my dear, the rumour(传言)is that she has already set up a string of successful businesses in northern England, though how a woman can know anything about that is beyond me.She will move in herself next month." "What is her name? " "Bingley."

"Is she married or single? "

"What a question! And none of your business. But her coming will be a fine thing for our five boys." "How so? How can it possibly affect them? "

"My dear love; those lazy boys need something to wake them up.There are bound to be jobs going."

" Is that her point in settling here? Surely as a woman she has simply taken a fancy to the place."

" Nonsense, my love, how little you've noticed the world has changed. She's got a first-rate degree and some sort of business qualification, I'm told. She surely needs one of our boys! Perhaps you might give her a call."

" Me? No.Perhaps you can take an interest. You still have your looks, after all.She may even offer you a job." "Oh, that's not likely. These new chances belong to the younger generation. But now you mention it, I think I'll go along all the same."

And Mrs Bennet went along. That was 10 years ago.She is now managing director of a FTSE-listed company.

…It would remain the case, of course, that Mrs Bennet would be one of very few women on the company board, that her salary would be lower than her male colleagues, her bonus of a more "female" dimension and her lifespan(年限)among the city's business leaders shorter than theirs.Still, she'd no doubt have enjoyed Davos-and might even have hobnobbed(攀谈)with influential figures.
