It was so cold yesterday evening outside 1______, like many parents waiting for their sons or daughters, with a coat under the arm 2______. We loving parents noticed the changes of the weather to come up with the idea -3______. Did they think it was a duty of the parents or were they grateful for what we did? All the lights in the teaching building were brightly on, and at 8:30 pm, the students in their school sports suits came out of the gate in twos or threes, 4______. It was not only a competition among the students, but also among the parents-it seems to me that the parents love their only child as if they loved their pet, and that they would feel happy or unhappy if the pet, 5______ won a prize or fell behind. When buster was brought into the animals' home, he was wet and smelly. But Jimmy who worked there know what soap and water and a good brushing could do.
After a bath, Jimmy put Buster in a cage and gave him some food and fresh water.
Buster wanted a home. He wanted a family. He wanted a yard. Most of all, he wanted someone to love him.
A man came over to the cage. Buster curled up on his blanket and closed eyes. “He’s no fun,” said the man. “He’s too quiet.”
A family came along. Buster barked and barked, so they would notice him. “ He’s too noisy,” said the mother. They all walked away.
Other people passed by.
“Too furry.”
“TOO bony.”
“Don’t give up,” Jimmy said to Buster. “Someone will want you.”
Another family asked Jimmy to take Buster out of the cage. “He’s too big,” said the mother. “He might scare the baby.”
The next family came along. “He’s too small,” said the father. “He wouldn’t be a good watchdog.”
“Sorry, Buster,” said Jimmy.
At the end of the day, another family came along-a mother, father, and a boy. Buster didn’t try to book big or small. He didn’t worry about looking furry or bony. He was just plain Buster, an ordinary, brown, medium-sized dog.
The boy looked in to Buster’s brown eyes. Buster looked into the boy’s blue eyes. “Look, Mom,” he said. “This dog is just the right size for me.”
Buster went home to a family and a yard. Best of all, He went home with someone who loved him just the way he was- an ordinary, brown, medium-sized dog.

One night l was sitting in my room half-listening when my 14-year-old son Tommy fought with his 12-year-old brother Kevin. I didn't pay attention when Kevin rushed up the stairs with the hurt on his face.
About 20 minutes later, when l was walking upstairs I hear Kevin crying inside the bathroom. I knocked on the door and asked, "Hey, Kevin, do you want to talk?"
No answer.
I tried again, "Why don't you come out of there?"
Again, no answer.
So, looking around, I took a stack of(一摞)cards and a pencil and wrote, "If you don't want to talk, we can write notes to each other."
An hour later I was still sitting on the floor outside the bathroom with two stacks of cards in front of me. One was blank and one was cards from Kevin on which he expressed all his terrible feeling into words for me, One of Kevin's notes said, "Nobody in this family cares about me. I am not the youngest, and I am not the oldest. Tommy thinks I am silly and Dad wishes he had the other
Kevin as a kid because he's better at basketball. And you're never around to even notice me."
My eyes became wet as I wrote back to him. "You know, Kevin, I really do love you and I'm sorry I don't always show it. I am here for you and you are loved in this family."
There was no answer for a while, but then l hear a tearing(撕)sound coming from inside the bathroom. Kevin who had run out of cards wrote on a torn paper cup, "Thanks."
I wrote back "For what?"
It returned to me with "Loving me" on it.
Since then, I try my best to never only half-notice my family members any more. Kevin and I have a closer relationship now. And sometimes when one of us notices that the other is unhappy, we'll smile and say "Write it on a paper cup."
