Teens Think about the Future

We talked to four students about what they are going to do in the future. Some of their ideas may surprise you. We asked each person, “What are you going to be when you grow up?”

I'm going to study a lot of math and science. I enjoy both of those subjects. When I finish college I'm going to be a computer scientist.

I'm going to be a professional basketball player. I know that it will be difficult, but there is nothing else I want to do. I really love basketball and know I can be great.

I'm going to be a singer and dancer. I already take dance lessons after school on Wednesday. And next year I'm taking singing lessons. You're going to see me on TV someday.

You know what I'm going to be when I grow up? I'm going to be a father, I'm going to take my kids camping and help them with their schoolwork, What could be more important than that?

1.What kind of lessons is Carol going to take?

She's going to take singing lessons.

Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答下列问题)
1.Helen Monson has always been interested in helping her community. Her first volunteer experience was for the American Red Cross when she was in high school. When she was a school teacher, she also found time to volunteer. One year, she organized a Super Saturday Fun Day for kids in the community. She also used to volunteer at the Mint Festival every year. One summer, she served food, another year she organized an art programme.
2.After she retired, she started volunteering to help the old. When her father was older, he was not able to see as well as he used to, which made her sad because he had always enjoyed reading. She decided it would be fun to read to elderly people in her community. She also helped one woman write her stories. Ann was almost 100 years old, and Helen wrote down information about her life when she visited her. She put the information in a book and got it published. Ann was very excited to share her life story with her children and her grandchildren.
3.After a hurricane(飓风) destroyed some southern cities, Helen volunteered again for the American Red Cross. She prepared food and answered phones in a care centre. She says, “I have always liked the Red Cross because the organization helps people in need no matter what.”
4.One day, Helen read an article in the newspaper about refugees(难民) who needed to learn English. Now, she meets once a week with Sahra, a 38-year-old woman, from Somalia. Sahra is living and working in a town about 30 minutes’ walk from where Helen lives. They work on reading and writing skills. Helen gave Sahra a camera and asked her to take pictures of her daily life. She developed the pictures, and then asked Sahra questions about them. In the end, they wrote a book together and used the photos in the book. This helped Sahra learn many new words about her everyday life.

I remember when I was young, my parents used to disagree nearly on everything I did.I liked wearing bright red clothes but they said the color was too sharp.I loved listening to rock and roll but they said it was too noisy.I hated eating vegetables but they said they were good for my health.

As for my study, my parents were very strict with me in every subject I was learning. They always asked me to study hard.Every night before I fell asleep, I asked myself,“What's wrong with me? Everything I do is always not right.I had to give up many things I liked doing.I could not develop my hobbies. My life was not as colorful as my friends' lives.”I felt stressed.

When I was at college, I studied the science of human activities.I got very good marks but I still did not understand why my parents were so strict.

Then I got married and had my own child.I heard myself telling him,“Don't talk on the phone so much! You should focus(集中)on your school work most of your time.Use your free time to read.Playing computers is not good. That T-shirt is not for your age.Put on a jacket!”It was at that time that I learned a valuable lesson in my life.I began to understand my parents. They told me what to do because they cared, just like I told my son what to do because I cared.Young people, behind all the advice your parents give you, what they are really saying is,“We care about you and we love you.”
