Recently, two professors of the University of Nebraska made a weekly television programme in which they discussed worthwhile books．Even primary school graduates watched, listened and learned．Therefore, it is not true that ETV has not been taught in the United States．I doubt the statement that "programmes which inform and enrich the mind in a general manner are wasted in schools"．There is a need to teach directly by television if we take teaching in the broad sense of the term.

Direct teaching by television has been explained as a series （系列）of television lessons directly related to a particular classroom textbook to satisfy the needs of pupils and teachers in a particular subject．Each lesson will be prepared by a teacher - specialist who also knows tele- vision production techniques and uses the modern technology in a television studio to put across his subject.

Will such TV lessons do without the services of a classroom teacher or will they cost him his reputation （名誉） or job? No! In fact, without the classroom teacher to review the material,  enlarge on it and answer questions that the students may bring up, such TV lessons would not be of very great value.

The children who watch ETV do so with different results - from very good to fair．Possibly,  the programs are too similar or too serious．Generally, they are not too long．Very likely, the  children who benefit least are the slow learners．However, it is believed that there is a bright  future for ETV inside and outside the classroom．The time may come, when bigger and clearer  screens will be used in the classroom, bigger and better programs will be exchanged between  countries and more foreign experts will be brought in, listened to and followed by newcomers in  the ETV field.

Regular child care provided outside home or by someone other than the mother does not in itself undermine （削弱） healthy emotional connections between mothers and their 15-month-old infants（幼儿）, according to a long-term national study．The finding holds even if care begins during the first 3 months after birth and runs for 30 hours or more per week．

The investigation consists of 1,153 children and their families living in or near Boston．The youngsters, no more than 1 month old when entered the study in 1991, will be tracked until the age of 7．Experimenters gave questionnaires to mothers in their homes and videotaped baby caretaker’s interacting with the kids at ages 1, 6, and 15 months．Independent observers rated the quality of each child care efforts and noted infant nervousness．Unlike most previous studies, this one allows researchers to observe each caretaker’s personality at child nursing, and kid’s emotional reaction by the equipment．After taking family factors into consideration, other psychologists state that the researchers found no relation between the quality of child care and infant’s response．But the experimenters contend that the boys who spent more than 30 hours per week in child care exhibited more emotion for their mothers than other boys who didn’t, and the girls who spent the same hours per week in child care showed a modest （适度的） rise in this emotion．Therefore, quality of child care outside home plays an important role in the connection between mothers and infants．

　　People have always wondered how the 36-year-old Canadian can be so skillful in the Chinese language even though it is considered by many as one of the most difficult languages in the world．But to Dashan, the great challenge was a piece of cake due to his deep interest, proper method and the excellent environment he created for himself.

　　“Interest is the best teacher.” That is a universal principle. Even if the 20-year-old Mark Rowswell--Dashan's real name--hadn't fully realized what attracted him to the Chinese department at the University of Toronto in Canada, he was already deeply interested in Chinese culture when he decided to have further study in Beijing.

　　Entering the Chinese department of Peking University in 1988, Dashan felt like a duck in water. Study is always a hard job, no matter how much interest you have. Therefore, effective ways are necessary to improvement. “Learn for life and learn in life”is Dashan's belief.
