83. In the mid-1990s, she began surfing the Internet, using a combination of software that read out what was on the screen. But there were problems: The system only read English. On-screen fill-out forms stumped the reader, and tables with vertical columns came out as gibberish. Asakawa decided to develop software specifically designed to handle the coding used for Web pages. She inserted aural cues to help browsing, like using a man’s voice for text and a woman’s for links. In 1997 she put out IBM’s first Home Page Reader in Japanese, then in English followed by nine other languages. 【
