题目列表(包括答案和解析)

阅读下列短文,从每小题所给的四个选项中选出一个最佳答案。

The United States is not the only country affected by the “computer revolution ”. All the major countries of the world have computers, and the developing countries have also realized that computers play a big part in their economic development.

Usually what one sees is a machine that looks like a typewriter; it is called a computer terminal (终端). But computers are also used in unseen ways. For example. they determine how much time there should be between traffic signals to prevent traffic problems and to keep millions of cars moving in an orderly flow. When you buy a car, a factory process (过程) that is controlled by a computer enables you to obtain a car with your own choice of colors and special features(特征) in just a few weeks' time. In medical laboratories, computers have reduced the mistakes in testing, and they have saved doctors' countless hours of work. Before long, medical histories of all Americans will be kept in computer “banks”. If a person becomes ill far from his home, local doctors will be able to get his medical record immediately. In science, the computer has performed in minutes experiments which would have required thousands of hours of work by human hands and minds.

Most experts agree that computers are necessary to solve the problems of increasing population, city living, and public affairs. Without computers, the jobs of solving these problems would require millions of workers to do tons of paperwork. Before any computer can work on any problem, it must be told what to do. Someone must program the computer, step-by-step. At first this was done by having the programmer write out his instructions in the form of numbers which would be “understood” by the machine. Within a short time, attempts were made to perform a system that would enable humans to communicate more easily with machines. Different “languages” were developed by means of which the programmer could use words that had meanings for him, and another program in the machine would translate the words into the computer's number system.

Without special training, it is impossible to understand exactly how a computer does its work. However, many people without scientific training use computers in their daily lives. In some American schools, for example, young children are being taught by computers for part of the school day.

The use of computers in school has worried some Americans. There are those who fear it will remove human element (成分) from teacher-student relationships. On the other hand, there are educators who consider computer program a valuable means of freeing teachers from the more boring and tiring tasks, thus enabling them to spend more time with a single student.

In education, as in business and industry, science and medicine, computers play an important part in almost every type of operation. The future will bring major advances in computer technology, which will aid man in his efforts to improve the world.

However important we may regard school life to be, there is always the fact that children spend more time at home than in the classroom. Therefore, the teacher should realize that parents have a great influence on their children.Parents can become strong allies(助手)of the school or they can get in the way of the school education.

Experts have realized the need to deep parents informed of the newer methods used in schools. Many headmasters have conducted workshops explaining such matters as the reading readiness programme, writing and mathematics.

Moreover, the classroom teacher, with the permission of the superlisors(管理者), can also play an important part in giving more knowledge to reporting pupils progress, teachers can help partents a lot in educating their children and parents can give much help to teachers.

Suppose that a father has been drilling Junior arithmetic lessons night after night. In a friendly talk between the teacher and the father, the teacher can help the parent to make Junior interested in it.He might be persuaded to let Junior join in discussing the family budget , buying the food, using a ruler or measuring cup at home setting the clock, calculating the distance of a trip and engaging in scores of other activities that have a mathematical basis.

If the father follows the advice, it is reasonable to say that he will soon realize that his son is making satisfactory progress in mathematics, and at the same time, enjoying the work.

Too often, however, teachers' talks with parents are devoted to small accounts of children's misdemeanors(不良行为).They talk about the laziness and poor work habits of the children.

What is needed is a more creative way in which the teacher, as an adviser, plants ideas in parents' minds to make sure that the child spends the many hours out of the classroom learning something useful.

In this way the school and the home join forces in educating children.

Among all the changes resulting from the massive entry of women into the work force, the great change that has occurred in the women themselves is not the least important. They see themselves in a new light, for they have discovered that they can just do as well as men in any profession. Some of them have gone to the top:the chief economist of General Motors is a woman, and so is the president of the great filmmaking company 20th Century Fox.Such successes have given women pride and self confidence.Of course, the picture is not perfect. In the first place, a very large number of women do not even try to enter“male”professions because they lack the necessary training or because they are not brave enough to risk taking new paths. For one woman executive(执行官)or one woman judge there are still countless typists and saleswomen who struggle through their day without any sense of victory.Besides, many of their braver sisters, who are daring to compete with men in higher fields, find that male opposition is still strong, and that society is still ready to explain a woman’s success by reasons that women are now free to enter any career that attracts them. The situation has improved, and the tide is not likely to turn back.

Women have gained pride, self-confidence, and independence.Have they gained happiness? Each working woman would have to give her personal answer to that question. Many women are too exhausted(精疲力竭的)by their double career(home and office)to enjoy either one. Many feel guilty about leaving their children to the care of strangers, about ignoring all the small things that non-working homemakers do for their family and their house. For women, taking a profession involves sacrifice –-- they have to make a difficult choice.Perhaps, the real progress is that the choice exists. In their grandmothers’ time, it did not.
