I had just finished high school when a disaster hit our family. It was October 1962, and ¡¡ 21¡¡ was out of the question. So I found a job. In 1971, my employer announced only graduates(´óѧ±ÏÒµÉú) would get ¡¡22¡¡ . My job seemed at a dead end unless I ¡¡ 23¡¡ further. ¡¡¡¡¡¡ I ¡¡ 24¡¡ an admission form£¨±í¸ñ£© and rode to the Human Resource£¨ÈËÁ¦×ÊÔ´£© Management office. On arriving there, I was ¡¡ 25¡¡ ---I couldn¡¯t find the form. It was the last day to ¡¡ 26¡¡ the form, and no blank forms were ¡¡27¡¡ at the office. I was standing there, disappointed, ¡¡ 28¡¡ an elderly gentleman asked me why I looked so ¡¡ 29¡¡ . I told him what happened, ¡¡ 30¡¡ , ¡°Now I¡¯ll have to wait another year.¡±

¡¡¡¡¡¡ ¡°Well,¡± he said, ¡°if you¡¯re really serious about studying further, come with me. I have a ¡¡ 31¡¡ blank form at home.¡±

¡¡¡¡¡¡ It was 12:30 pm. The counter£¨¹ñ̨£© would ¡¡ 32¡¡ at 2 pm. His home was 10 km away and I had a slight ¡¡33 of going somewhere with a stranger. Anyway, this was my last chance. We reached his house on my bike. He advised me to remain ¡¡ 34¡¡ , and gave me a pen and the form. When it was ¡¡ 35¡¡ , he told me to rush back and ¡¡¡¡36¡¡ carefully. I reached the office at 1:58 pm. There were two people in line, waiting for their ¡¡37¡¡ . Just then, the counter official announced that no more forms would be ¡¡ 38¡¡ after mine. I breathed a sigh of ¡¡ 39¡¡ .

¡¡¡¡¡¡ I passed the exam and later got a bachelor¡¯s degree. I also got the promotions. I ¡¡¡¡40¡¡ it all to the timely help from a true gentleman whose name I forgot to ask.

¡¡ A Good Friend, A Second Self

I couldn¡¯t believe my ears when I heard my name called for the leading role in our high school play. Mrs. Dermitt, my drama teacher, had been looking for someone to play an energetic boy in a comedy. Luckily for me, she thought that I could handle the ¡¡36 .

That afternoon my friend Kevin and I talked ¡¡37 about the play. Although Kevin hadn¡¯t been ¡¡38 for a part on stage, his job with the set crew was important to the success of the play. I told him I was a little ¡¡39 because I had a lot of lines to memorize.

¡°You can do it.¡± He said. I knew I could ¡¡40 him: we had been friends since the third grade, and we ¡¡41 a good team.

Preparations for the play moved at a rapid pace. While working hard with the set crew, Kevin ¡¡42 spent hours helping me learn my lines. He often said my lines with me by silently moving his lips. We ¡¡43 that he could probably play my part as well as I could.

Three days before the ¡¡44 night, everything was ready for the performance. But when I woke up ¡¡45 a fever and sore throat on the day of the play, the entire production came to a sudden ¡¡46 . Everyone in the drama department was worried, ¡¡47 there was no way I could perform. The play was ¡¡48 to open in fewer than six hours, and we had no time to cancel. I tried to think of a way to ¡¡49 . Then it hit me ¨C Kevin knew the ¡¡50 as well as I did. I called Mrs. Dermitt to give her my ¡¡51 . Within a few short hours, Kevin stood onstage in costume and makeup. The amusing lines he had ¡¡52 with me so many times made the crowd laugh and cheer. In a strange turn of events, Kevin and I had ¡¡53 the day for everyone by working as a team.

Of course, I was terribly disappointed to have ¡¡54 my chance in the spotlight, but I was extremely ¡¡55 to have such a good friend.

¡¡¡¡¡¡ A Love Note to My Mom

When I was a little girl, I would often accompany you as you modeled (T̨չʾ) for fashion photographers. It was years later that I finally understood what role modeling ¡¡36 in your life. Little did I know you were 37 every penny you earned to go to 38 school.

I cannot thank you enough for ¡¡39 you told me one autumn afternoon when I was nine. After finishing my homework, I wandered into the dining room where you were buried ¡¡40 piles of law books. I was ¡¡41 why you were doing what I do¡ªmemorizing textbooks and studying for ¡¡42 ? When you said you were in law school, I was more puzzled. I didn¡¯t know Moms ¡¡43 be lawyers too. You smiled and said, ¡°In life, you can do anything you want to do.¡±

As young as I was, that statement kept ¡¡44 in my ears. I watched as you faced the ¡¡45 of completing your studies, starting companies with Dad, while still being a ¡¡46 and a Mom of five kids. I was exhausted just watching you ¡¡ 47 . With your words of wisdom in my ¡¡48 mind, I suddenly felt unlimited freedom to dream. My whole world ¡¡49 . I set out to live my life filled with ¡¡50 , seeing endless possibilities for personal and professional achievements.

Your words became my motto. I ¡¡51 found myself in the unique position of being either the first (woman doctor in Maryland Rotary) ¡¡52 one of the few women (chief medical reporters) in my field. I gained strength every time I said, ¡°Yes, I¡¯ll try that.¡±Encouraged by your ¡¡53 , I have forged ahead(ÒãȻǰÐÐ) with my life¡¯s journey, less afraid to make mistakes, and ¡¡54 meeting each challenge. You did it, and now I¡¯m ¡¡55 it. Sorry, got to run. So much to do, so many dreams to live.

After getting married I moved to a flat. I felt pretty comfortable living there 16 something strange happened. I had a doll on the windowsill (´°Ì¨) facing the living room. One day, I came back home from work and found it was facing the window 17 . I thought it was my husband who played a ¡¡18 on me, but he did not admit. I 19 the doll to face the living room again.

The next day, the 20 thing happened. But this time, my husband was so 21 that I believed he had not done that. There was no ¡¡22 of anyone breaking into the house while we were away. And there was no reason to ¡¡23 that someone stole into the house just to turn the doll and left. What happened not only ¡¡24 us but also frightened us.

The doll kept turning every day ¡¡25 Saturdays and Sundays when I was at home. I began to wonder if there was a ghost.

Then ¡¡26 a school holiday, and I didn¡¯t go to work. While exercising in the living room, I 27 the doll was turning by itself! It was very frightening but I 28 knew why it was turning. There was a construction site right next to the building where I ¡¡29 . The construction was at the stage of pile driving (´ò×®) and our building shook ¡¡30 with each pounding (ÖØ»÷). 31 I lived on the top floor, the shaking was quite strong. ¡¡32 , the doll moved little by little with the shaking. This also 33 why the doll never turned on Saturdays and Sundays, 34 there was no construction work at weekends. If I had not been home on a weekday, I would never have 35 the truth.
