Many people will remember the flight of the spaceship Challenger, in June, 1983.The achievement of Sally Ride, America's first female astronaut to fly into space, made this flight especially memorable.Students from two Camden, New Jersey, high schools, however, are probably to remember Nor-ma rather than Sally whenever they think about the flight.

Norma didn't travel alone. She brought about 100 companions along with her.Norma was an ant, a queen ant who, with her subject, made up the first ant colony (群体) to travel into space. The ants were part of a science experiment designed by students to test the results of weightlessness on insects.

The equipment designed by the students for their colony functioned perfectly throughout the long space trip. The young scientists and their teachers were very sad to find that their insect astronauts had all died at some point before the container

was returned to the school and opened. The problem did not happen in space, but on the ground after Challenger had landed. The spaceship remained in the desert for nearly a week before the ant colony was removed. The hot, dry desert air dried out the colony's container and the ants died from lack of moisture (水分).

In spite of the death of the ants, the project was considered a success because it did provide useful information.Students will continue their tests to point out exactly what went wrong. They will try to prevent the same difficulties from happening again on future missions (使命).They don't want to be discouraged by the demise of the ants or by the $ 10,000 shuttle fare they will have to pay to send the next colony of ants into space.

1.The story is mainly about________.

[ ]

A.Sally Ride's first ride

B.space equipment for insects

C.a space experiment with ants

D.going to school in New Jersey

2.The underlined word demise is another word for ________.

[ ]

B.moisture
C.space
D.leader

3.The project wasn't a failure because ________.

[ ]

A.important things were learned

B.dead ants are better

C.everything went as scientists had wished

D.many people still remembered it

4.The ants died because________.

[ ]

A.weightlessness harmed them

B.space caused too much pain

C.no one fed them in space

D.they landed in the desert

5.On the next space trip, ants ________.

[ ]

A.will be sent without people

B.should avoid being left in the desert

C.will have to pay double fare

Nick was tired of life.Every day was exactly the same.

“What I need is a little adventure!”Nick thought as he waited at the bus stop one morning.Nick's little adventure happened sooner than he had expected!

While he was on the bus, reading his newspaper, the man sitting next to him suddenly pushed a large brown envelope in his hands.“Here, take this!”he murmured. Then he stood up and got off the bus before Nick could say a word.

Nick sat there holding the envelope. It felt heavy. There were papers inside, or money perhaps.“I'd better hand it over to the police.”he thought. There was a police station close to his office. But as he got off the bus, a man came up to him.He was obviously waiting for something.“He wants the envelope.”Nick thought.Nick began to walk quickly and the man hurried after him.Nick started to run, and the man began to run, too.But then just before he got to the police station.Nick managed to lose the man in the crowds when he entered the police station. The man was no longer in sight.

Inside the police station, the envelope was full of money-false money.“Obviously the man made a mistake, ”the inspector said, “He thought you was one of the gang!Well, congratulations!”

Not everyone in the world requires the same amount of living space. The amount of space a person needs around him is a cultural difference, not an economic one.Knowing your own psychological space needs is important because they strongly affect your choices, including, for example, the number of bedrooms in the home.If you were brought up in a two-child family and both you and your sister or brother had your own bedrooms, the chances are, if you have two children or more, that you also will offer separate bedrooms for them.In America, for example, they train people to want to have their own rooms by giving them their own rooms when they are babies. This is very rare in the world. In many other countries, the baby sleeps in the same bed with his parents or in a bed near them.

The space in the home also shows a lot about psychological space needs. Some families gather closer to each other and the size of their house has nothing to do with it.Others have separate little corners where family members go to be alone.

Although it is true that psychological space needs are not decided by economic reasons, they sometimes have to be changed a little because of economic pressures. It is almost impossible, however, to completely change your psychological space needs.
