On May 27, 1995, our life was suddenly changed. It happened a few minutes past three,　1　 my husband, Chris, fell from his horse as it　2　 over a fence. Chris was paralyzed (瘫痪) from the chest down, 　3　 to breathe normally. As he was thrown from his horse, we entered into a life of 　4　with lots of unexpected challenges(挑战). We went from the “haves” to the “havenots”. Or so we thought.

　5　 what we discovered later were all the gifts that came out of　 6　 difficulties. We came to learn that something 　7　could happen in a disaster . All over the world people 　8　Chris so much that letters and postcards poured in every day. By the end of the third week in a 　9　center in Virginia, about 35,000 pieces of 　10　had been received and sorted.

As 　11　, we opened letter after letter. They gave us 　12　 and became a source of strength for us. We used them to 　 13　ourselves. I would go to the pile of letters marked with “Funny” if we needed a 　14　, or to the “Disabled” box to find advice from people in wheelchairs or　15　in bed living happily and　16　.

These letters, we realized, had to be shared. And so 　17　 we offer one of them to you.

One day, when I was in high school, I saw a kid named Kyle from my class walking home from school with all his books, I thought to myself, “__36__ would anyone bring home all his books for the weekend? He must really be 　37__.”As I was walking, I saw several kids running toward him. They ran at him, 　38 all his books out of his arms and he fell down in the dirt, His glasses went 　39　 and landed in the grass.

My 　40 went out to him. So, I ran over to him. 41 I handed him his glasses, he looked at me and said, “Hey, thanks!” I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived. As it 　42　 , he lived near me. We talked all the way home. Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.

Kyle was the 43 student of our class, one of those guys that really found themselves during high school. Therefore he had the 　44 to prepare a 45 speech. On the graduation day, I could see that he was 46　 .So, I patted him on the back and said, “Hey, big guy, you’ll be 　47 !” He looked at me and smiled.

One way of preventing (阻止) floods may be by making rain! This may sound rather 1 . As we know, heavy rain is the 2 of floods, and in Malaysia, most of the 3  are caused by the annual monsoon (一年一度的湿季风), which brings heavy rain to the east coast. If, 4 ,the rain could be made 5  in the South China Sea, there would be 6 floods since the rain could not reach the east coast.

Is it possible to make 7  give up their rain? Yes, it is.

As you probably know, clouds are caused  8  air containing water-vapor (水蒸气). The air rises and, since water-vapor 9  water when it cools, very tiny drops of water are formed. Since these drops are very10 , they float (漂浮) in the air and 11  a cloud. When the cloud rises, however, the drop becomes 12  . Because of this, they 13  together and become big drops. The big drops are no longer able to float because of their 14  , and they fall. As they 15 , they pick up more drops and become bigger. This is the cause of rain.

Rain making 16  making these bigger drops form and fall 17 they would normally do so. This can be done by “seeding” the clouds with chemicals,  18  planting seeds in the ground. Rain can be produced 19  by these chemicals. The seeding is done by 20  which fly through the clouds.

I ran across a dim photo of him the other day ，going through old thing . He’s been dead for 25 years . His name was Rex.

　 1 was his favourite recreation . He had as much 　 2 in the water as any person I have known . You didn’t have to throw a stick in the water to 　3　 　him to go in . Of course , he would bring back a stick to you if you 　4　 throw one in

That 　5 me of the night , 　6　 he brought back a small chest that he found somewhere how 7 nobody ever knew . Since it was Rex , it 　8　 easily have been half a mile . The chest wasn’t a good one . It was just a 　 9 old piece that somebody 　 10 . Still , it was something he wanted , probably 11 it presented a nice problem in transportation . It tested his courage . We first knew about his achievement when , when ,deep in the night , we 12　 him trying to get the chest up onto the porch . It sounded 　13 two or three people were trying to tear the house 　14 . We came downstairs and turned on the 15 light . Rex was on the top step trying to pull the thing up, but it had 　16　 somehow and he was just holding his own . I suppose he would have held his own 　17　 dawn if we hadn’t helped him. The next day we carted the chest miles away and threw it out . If we had thrown it out in a 　18　 place , he would have brought it home again , as a small token of his strength in such matters . 　19 ,he had been taught to carry wooden objects about and he was 　 20　 of his skill .
