Each of us fails from time to time. If we are wise, we accept these failures as a  21  part of the learning process. But all too often  22  parents and teachers we disallow this same right to our children.

When I see a child  23   from this kind of pressure, I think of Donnie.

Donnie was my youngest third-grader. His  24   of failure kept him from classroom games that other children enjoyed. He  25   answered questions--- he was afraid he might be wrong. I tried my best to build his  26   . But nothing changed until midterm, when Mary Anne, a student teacher, was assigned to our classroom. She was young and pretty, and she loved children. My pupils, Donnie included, all  27   her very much.

One morning, we were working on maths problems at the chalk-board. Donnie had  28   the problems with pains-taking tidiness. Pleased with his progress, I  29   the children with Mary Anne and went for art materials. When I returned, Donnie was in 30  . He’d missed the third problem.

My student teacher looked at me in despair. Suddenly her face  31   . From the desk we shared, she got a container filled with pencils.

“Look, Donnie,” she said, kneeling beside him and gently  32   the tear-stained(弄脏的) face from his arms. “ I’ve got something to  33   you.” She removed the pencils, one at a time, and placed them on his desk.

“See these   34   , Donnie,” she continued. “ They belong to Mrs. Lindstorm and me. See how the erasers are   35   . That’s because we make mistakes too. But, we erase the mistakes and try again. That’s what you  36   learn to do, too.

She kissed him and stood up. “Here,” she said, “I’ll leave one of these pencils on  37   desk so you’ll remember that everyone makes mistakes,  38   teachers.” Donnie looked up with love in his eyes and a smile.

The   39   became Donnie’s prized possession. That, together with Mary Anne’s frequent encouragement, gradually  40   him that it’s all right to make mistakes--- as long as you erase them and try again.

My Fellow Americans,
I have recently been told that I am one of the millions of Americans who will be suffered from Alzheimer’s Disease (老年痴呆症).
Upon learning this news, Nancy & I had to decide whether as private citizens we would  36  this a private matter or we would make this news known in a  37  way.
In the past Nancy suffered from breast cancer  38  I had my cancer surgeries (外科手术). We found that after we told it to the public, we were able to  39  public awareness(意识). We were happy that  40   many more people went to have a test. They were treated in early stages and able to  41  to normal, healthy lives.
So now, we feel it is  42   to share it with you. In opening our hearts, we hope this might promote greater  43  of this condition. Perhaps it will encourage a clearer understanding of the individuals and families who are  44   by it.
At the moment I feel just fine. I’d  45   to live the remainder of the years God gives me on this earth doing the things I have  46  done. I will continue to share  47    journey with my beloved Nancy and my family. I plan to enjoy the great outdoors and stay in touch  48   my friends and supporters.
Unfortunately, as Alzheimer’s Disease  49 , the family often suffers a lot. I only wish there was some way I could spare Nancy from this   50  experience. When the time comes I am confident that with your help she will   51  it with faith and courage.
At last, let me thank you, the American people for giving me the great honor of  52   me to serve as your President. When the Lord calls me home,  53  that may be, I will leave with the greatest love for this country of ours and endless optimism (乐观) for its future.
I now begin this  54  that will lead me into the sunset of my life. I know that for America there will always be a bright   55  ahead.

Australian Flag Designs by Readers of the Sun-Herald
We received dozens of responses after inviting readers to send in their designs for a new flag. The designs we received include:
James Anthony, Drummoyne
James reduces the Union Jack down in size and changes its shape to become a reminder of the British tradition rather than canceling it altogether. At the same time he suggests enlarging the stars of the Southern Cross. His design attempts to use the best of both worlds in a newly designed flag.
As he says, “the British part of the Australian Flag is too big and the Australian bits are too small. When you make the stars bigger the Australian flag can look impressive.”
Joe Bollen, Turranmurra
Joe’s flag has the main elements of a risen sun, white horizon(地平线), red earth at the base and the Southern Cross. He intends to make the risen sun a special Australian symbol on the flag. He believes it represents life. The Southern Cross shows that we live in the Southern Hemisphere. (半球)
Maria Ieraci, Sydney
Maria deleted the Union Jack but otherwise kept the flag as is with the Southern Cross and Federation Star. She says, ‘There is only one correct way to change the Australian flag” and that is “to drop the Union Jack ---- when Australia becomes a Republic”, which she hopes will be before 2010.
Ron Bennett, Sydney
Ron recommends using the Aboriginal colors but replacing their image of the sun with the map of Australia. He says, “Australia is unique being an island continent with an instantly recognizable outline at that” and “this will leave no doubt as to which country the flag belongs.”
