I attended a meeting on 12th July to discuss the proposed building of a nuclear power station near the city. A spokesman for the Nuclear Energy Advisory Group summarized the reasons for choosing nuclear energy, the benefits it would bring, and then went on to talk about matters of safety.

Atmospheric pollution of the area around the city is at present very high. There is also the problem of acid rain, which is responsible for widespread damage to nearby forests and lakes, as well as to the city's historic buildings. It was pointed out that nuclear energy does not add to the greenhouse effort or produce acid rain, so using nuclear energy would result in a much cleaner environment.

It was mentioned that were we to use nuclear energy as an energy source the cost of electrcity would decrease significantly. Apparently, once the power station was in operation, we sould expect reductions in the cost of electrcity of up to 30%. Another benefit to the community would be the creation of several hundred jobs.

The spokesman for the NEAG was eager to point out that fears of possible dangers to health or to the environment were unfounded. She assured us that very strict safety measures would be taken and there would be no question of nuclear waste being dumped near the city or in the surrounding area. The NEAG ruled out the possibility of an accident ever happening.

1.One of the reasons for building a nuclear power station near the city is to ________.

[ ]

A.limit atmospheric pollution

D.protect the environment

2.From the text we know that the cost of electricity would be reduced ________.

[ ]

A.by using nuclear energy

B.with more jobs given

C.by adding more energy sources

D.without the power station

3.What do you think the NEAG is from the text?

[ ]

A.A magazine.
B.An organization.
C.A business center.
D.A position.

4.People have no reason to worry about the potential accident because ________.

[ ]

A.dangers to health never exist
