I love spending weekends with my grandparents. I felt especially welcome and    36    in Grany’s small kitchen. It was there that we had conversations and Grany always seemed to include a bit of    37    with every recipe she prepared.

I remember one Saturday morning    38   . After breakfast I asked Grany, “What kind of soup are you making today?” “Vegetable beef,” she answered, “And you can help by chopping some carrots and celery.” As I slowly peeled carrots, I    39   , “I’ve got to give an oral work report next week and I’m    40   .”

Grany looked at me and said, “Most people are afraid of    41    speaking. But remember, the only thing you have to fear is fear    42   .”

“But I don’t like standing up in front of everybody.    43    I forget what I’m going to say?”

“Well, no. That would be a lot of    45    work.”

“But do you like my soup?” she asked. Soup? I wondered. I thought we were talking about my life.

“I love your soup, Grany.” I said.

“Well, you know, a lot of people don’t    46    homemade soup these days. They say it’s too much trouble. First you have to cook a nice broth(肉汤)and then chop all the vegetables into bite-size pieces.”

“But I don’t    47    a little trouble,” she said. “It adds variety and flavor to my soup and to my life. My soup would be    48    bland(淡而无味的)without the vegetables, and so would my life if it didn’t have the little    49   .”

After pausing she added, “Besides, you have to remember God knows exactly    50    he’s cooking up in your life. You’ve got to trust him with the recipe.” She smiled and then walked to the sink to start washing the dishes.

While I help Grany  51  , I thought as well what she had said. I still had a few days to  52    my oral report.

That Saturday, Grany gave me food for thought as well as a bowl of her homemade soup. Every spoonful of Grany’s masterpiece was    53    with delicious bits of meat and vegetables. As I enjoyed the meal with my grandparents,    54    my problems didn’t seem quite so big any more. I was determined to work on them. Grany had said hard work    55   . Maybe I too could turn a little trouble into something as special as Grany’s homemade soup.tesoon

第三部分  阅读理解(共20小题:每小题2.5分,满分50分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

Today, as in every other day of the year, more than 3000 U.S. adolescents will smoke their first cigarette on their way to becoming regular smokers as adults. During their lifetime, it can be expected that of these 3000 about 23 will be murdered, 30 will die in traffic accidents, and nearly 750 will be killed by a smoking-related disease. The number of deaths attributed to cigarette smoking outweighs all other factors, whether voluntary or involuntary, as a cause of death.

Since the late 1970s, when daily smoking among high school seniors reached 30 percent, smoking rates among youth have declined. While the decline is impressive, several important issues must be raised.

First, in the past several years, smoking rates among youth have declined very little. Second, in the late 1970s, smoking among male high school seniors exceeded that among female by nearly 10 percent. The statistic is reversing. Third, several recent studies have indicated high school dropouts have excessively high smoking rates, as much as 75 percent.

Finally, though significant declines in adolescent smoking have occurred in the past decade, no definite reasons for the decline exist. Within this context, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) began its current effort to determine the most effective measures to reduce smoking levels among youth.

36. According to the author, the deaths among youth are mainly caused by __________.

A. traffic accidents                                   B. smoking-related disease

C. murder                                                 D. all of these

37. Every day there are over ______ high school students who will become regular smokers.

A. 750                         B. 23                    C. 30                    D. 3000

38. By “dropout” the author means __________.

A. students who failed the examination        B. students who left school

C. students who lost their way                    D. students who were driven out of school

39. The reason for declining adolescent smoking is that __________.

A. NCI has taken effective measures

B. smoking is prevented among high school seniors

C. there are many smokers who have died of cancer

D. none of these

40. What is implied but not stated by the author is that __________.

A. smoking rates among youth have declined very little

B. there are now more female than male smokers among high school seniors

C. high smoking rates are due to the increase in wealth

D. smoking at high school is from low socio-economic backgrounds

People are being invited to sit down to eat with their neighbors in a nationwide lunch party designed to promote community spirit. The Big Lunch is the idea of the Eden Project in Cornwall. It aims to persuade people up and down the country to hold street lunch parties.

Tens of thousands of vegetables, fruits and flowers were used to construct a giant 2,000-square-foot lunch invitation in London’s Convent Garden. More than 9,000 cauliflowers and 800 bananas were used.

According to the organizers, people who decide to take part in the activity will get support from large companies which will supply many of the necessities, including plants to be given out to people to grow. The organizers think that the Big Lunch is a great opportunity for people to get together and spend time with their neighbors, friends and families. Events like this also help build strong communities. People can show their talents, get over their embarrassment, shake hands and get to know their neighbors, and realize that the neighborhood where they live can be a great source of happiness and enjoyment.

Imagine a day on which millions of us, throughout the UK, sit down to have lunch together with our neighbors in the middle of our streets, around our tower blocks, and on every patch of common ground. D
The advantages and disadvantages of a large population have long been a subject of
discussion among economists. It has been argued that the supply of good land is limited. To feed a large population, poor land must be cultivated and good land made full use of. Thus, each person produces less and this means a lower average income than could be obtained with a smaller population. Other economists have argued that a large population gives more opportunities for specialization such as ports, roads, and railways, which are not likely to be built unless there is a big demand to justify them.
One of the difficulties in carrying out a world-wide birth control program lies in the fact that official attitudes to population growth vary from country to country depending on the level of industrial development and the availability of food and raw materials. In a developing country where a vast expanding population is pressing hard upon the limits of food, space and natural resources, it will be the first concern of the government to place a limit on the birthrate, whatever the consequences may be. In a highly industrialized society the problem may be more complex. A decreasing birthrate may lead to unemployment because it results in a declining market for products. When the pressure of the population on housing declines, prices also decline and the building industry is weakened. Faced with considerations such as these, the government of a developed country may well prefer to see a slowly increasing population, rather than one which is stable or in decline.
54.According to the first paragraph, a smaller population may mean______ if land is limited.
A.lower productivity, and a lower average income
B.lower productivity, but a higher average income
C.higher productivity, and a higher average income
D.higher productivity, but a lower average income
55.In a developed country, people will perhaps go out of work if the birthrate_______.
A.goes up B.goes down  C.remains stable  D.is limited
56.It is not easy to carry out a worldwide birth-control program because______.
A.there are too many underdeveloped countries in the world
B.developing countries are short of food and raw materials
C.even developed countries may have some complex problems of population
D.different governments show quite opposite views to the population
